Wood stocks shrunk?

I had my poly stored in my gun safe upstairs in a usgi fiberglass stock. Took it out and put the action in a couple wood stocks that I was keeping in the basement. They both used to lockup nice and tight. One was big red birch that I bedded just the top reciever contact. Both wood stocks lockup real loose now. Is this common? Did they loose moisture and shrink?

I have two Russian SKS's, one was in a house fire before I picked it up. It wasn't burnt or charred but it was exposed to pretty high heat . The other rifle has a very tight fit to the stock and the one that was in the fire rattel's around inside its stock.

The guy I bought it from said before the fire it fit the stock nice and snug. I'm guessing the extreme heat dried up the wood to the point of shrinkage.

Still shoots good but I plan on getting another stock for it somewhere down the line.

If you have a basement furnaace or water heater, then I suspect it is very dry down there this time of year. Ideally, the humidity should be kept around 50-60%. Same goes for artwork and wine corks.

Wood stock will shrink if not completely sealed. Otherwise, you may need to rub in a light coat of oil annually. Hunters have been doing this for decades.
