I picked up a full auto Vietnam era handguard for my SOCOM16 in USGI surplus condition, then modified it to fit over the pic rail. It was in great shape and easy project. I've seen a bunch of these at auction sites.

Used the original handguard to map out where to make the cuts/remove material. Used a new angled box knife making repeated cuts over and over the lines until completely thru. Then sanded and painted the piece.

It snapped right into the rifle even better than the original.

Hoping this will aid in barrel cooling, especially during rapid fire drills.

1. you need to have at least 1/16 inch space between the hand guard and the stock, as you can see from the second last picture ?
2. why do you have camo tape wrap around the hand guard ?
3. why is your scope mounted so HIGH ?
4. you want your barrel to cool down, but you have half the holes covered with scope mount and tape ?
5. you would be better off getting a regular scope mount, or a Casa Mount from M14.CA .

1) Good, there is...lol. Guess photo not showing that.
2) There's a tactical light and a tape switch for that light. The tape switch utilizes a wire which I ran over the top instead of under it to other side. The wrap is around that wire to keep it from being snagged on or whatever it could get snagged on. Branches, wires, fencing ect.
3) It's a LaRue Tactical Extended pic rail, it's actually about the same height as if it was mounted / attached to the clipper strip so I guess maybe camera angle. Entire set up can be easily removed and reattached w/o effecting zero. I've run 500 rnds thru this set up so far. Works perfectly as you can see from this 100 yard target off bench on a bag, cheap ammo, 65yr old eyes with stigmatism......with two head shot for last two rounds I had left.
4) Look at my second photo. Several areas where vents were needed to be trimmed out to accomodate the SOCOM's pic rail. And no, there no vents are covered up which were left. Count the holes and compare with photo 2......There are three rows left forward of pic rail. Additionally the cut out area around rail and behind it is still open.
5) Thanks but not interested in another scope mount, this works for me, but thanks for the suggest.

Thanks, the tape is to keep the tape switch wire from getting snagged on , esp if crawling around or in thick brush. I found the cheek rest set up on Amazon. No manufacturer, I'm inclined to think its someone making them at home or in their garage. It's well made and hardware is tight and functional. $20.00.

I appreciate some of the earlier aftermarket stocks for the M1A with all the rails and such. Most of those are now NLA, or go for big $$$ used. And they all seem to add a ton of weight to an already somewhat nose heavy rifle.

Sorta why I went with modifying the original stock while still keeping complaint with Mass's BS regs we have. I can legally have high capacity magazines of any vintage / caliber due to a loophole in the law where I retired from, but things like; folding stocks, flash hiders and collapsible stocks are not permissible here ( yet ) on any rifle larger than a .22 bearing detachable magazines. So options here are limited....

I did come close on the QD GrovTec Tub I drilled and tapped though.

It does plug in and works / rotates perfectly.

With respect to the LaRue Tactical Extended pic rail set up I'm using and its height. Here's retired Navy SEAL "Coch", and the last M1A he used for work with Seal Team V before retirement. Very similar mount set up as what I have. If there's anyone here who knows what muzzle device he has on the other rifle, maybe let him know. Apparently not a lot of info around on it.
