Cartridge typeWeight per round (approx.)Weight for 210 rounds
M80 Ball (7.62×51)379.5 gr (24.6 g / 0.0543 lb)11.4 lbs
Shellshock M80 (100gr bullet, 50% case)240 gr (15.6 g / 0.0343 lb)7.2 lbs
7.62×39mm (M43)270 gr (17.5 g / 0.0386 lb)8.1 lbs
5.56×45mm (M193, 55gr)179 gr (11.6 g / 0.0256 lb)5.4 lbs
I was playing around with AI and found out it may be possible to drastically lighten the load of using 308 with shellshock cases (which are coming soon and claim to reduce the weight of the shell by 50%), and by using a 100grain copper projectile. Of course we can leave m80 ball for vehicle mounted weapons and designated marksmen. Not sure you would see as much benefit with 556 in this hypothetical but very possible scenario.

I’ve brought a scout length m14 on a night time predator hunt with polymer true velocity w nosler accubond ammo. I think it is somewhere between 1/3- 1/2 the weight of standard brass ammo. In one 5 round hunting mag, you wouldn’t notice the difference. If you’re carrying hundreds of rounds, you def would appreciate it.

I was wondering if that stuff would work in an m14, I will have to admit that i have a bias of trust towards something made out of metal though. Hey, maybe we can bully Shell Tech or Badlands munitions into making the hypothetical 100gr a reality for the commercial market. Why not have a rifle you can carry a fighting load, that can take ammo from a belt fed, AANNDD can use match to attain 1,000 yds or even use subsonics?

so the scale I had measured in grams, I only had a 110grain projectile to weigh so if I had a 100grain 30 cal bullet, it would weigh 16 grams. This means that a 210rounds load out would weigh a little less than 7 1/2lbs compared to 8 1/2 lbs for 210rnds of 762x39. A “full” load out of 77gr OTM 556 would weigh 6lbs.
