FWIW ---- For those that may not know, TALON MFG. is a US company that demills USGI ammo that it gets from the USGOV. and then re-manufactures it and sells it to properly licensed private individuals or companies. Their ammo is sold by the CMP,Cheaper Than dirt, Sportmens Guide, just to name a few, the complete list would be too volumous to post here.
Due to the surplus market drying up I contacted them in Nov. of `06 and started the formal process required to purchase ammunition from them (7.62x51& .30 M2 ). FYI.- They require purchasing minimum 25K lots of whatever you order. My intent was to offer it to the shooting public to provide quality ammo at a low price. At the time their sales staff informed me that they did not know what they would have available for `07 yet, that info would not be available until they knew what they were getting from the USGOV. ,and they would know in Jan. or Feb. of `07 and would contact me.
Their sales staff called me yesterday afternoon to inform me that they would have nothing for sale in `07 but .50 cal.ammo and components. It seems that the USGOV. is not getting rid of any other types ammo this year other than the .50 cal. stuff. They could not confirm they could only ASSUME this meant USGOV. supplies are tight. But they stated they would keep me informed if the situation changed.
This is not the word for word version, it is the abridged one.

THANX for the info...It is not good news for anyone involved, and it is certainly not good for the shooting public. It is going to impact the local economic`s of those WV. communities, and it is going to add to the deficit in the ammunition supply situation. I hope someone steps up to fill the void , but that even at best would be some time down the road. Thanx again

I am not so sure their closure will adversely effect the communities they operated based on the newspapers. Sounds like it may help. DEP violations, Workers comp issues, falsifying government reports, EXPLOSIONSGI3 . Doesnt sound to me like much of a loss. Sure some folks may lose their job but it sounds like the state got srewed on thier economic development loan by a rather irresponsible company. I hope those who lose thier job are able to find work but I dont think Talon, as a company, will be missed

Being that Talon was the PREMIERE supplier of .50BMG ammo and specialty gear, the .50cal community just lost the biggest and best source of ammo. That would be like the AK guys losing Wolf and all imported ammo, relying on US factory offerings only. It makes things more complicated and almost unaffordable.

OK, I see how it may inconvenience .50bmg shooters but look at their recordGI3 They were doing everything wrong and in many cases illegal. its unfortunate that the .50 guys will need to find another source but business abhores a vacuum. if there is a demand, someone will fill it. Wolf can play it fast and loose as their product isnt based in the US. Like many things made overseas, they can do it cheaper because they can cut corners and not complie with many things that add significantly to the cost of manufacturing in the US

03psd,
Talon going out of business is not that big of a deal. Their ammunition certainly did not enjoy the reputation of "premium" hence the comparison with Wolf. I do not have much use for "plinking" ammo at longer ranges (doubt you see much steelcased Wolf used at highpower matches). Upside is a lot of brass and bullets will get into the market. I agree with you 03 - someone will step into to fill the void. Thanks for the info Graystoke.

P.S. 1 million round minimum order - now that would be one heck of a group buy - approximately 100,000 pounds. That'll strain the old foundation!

Maybe my comparison was a little harsh, but it's true that Talon was mostly plinking ammo and projectile reloading source. However, for the .50BMG guys, no Talon means ammo just went up over $1 per round minimum for most shooters. It's really like us .308 guys, even though surplus is hard to find, to the .50BMG guys it would be like us having to completely rely on commercial ammo, with Q3130 being the cheapest solution.

When I was buying Talon, I was paying close to $1.35 per round, shipped. With price increases and the loss of Talon, the next choice is corrosive FN ammo for about $1.80 or "commercial" ammo for well over $3 per round GI4

jbrooks and CanonNinja - you both are dead on. Best to get all you can of what you can while you can. With the DimRats flexing their imaginary muscles the brief respite we have enjoyed with the sunset of the so called "assault weapons" ban may be short lived. Also IMHO - You might want consider picking up a M14 receiver from Hawk’s forum group buy while you are at it. A pre, err, no-ban, err, just-pre-Hillary receiver might be a pretty good thing to have.
Cheers, SNH
PS – Only silver lining is there may be a lot of 50 bullets on the market because of Talon’s situation.

From what I'm hearing from about 4 different distributors, the Feds are at Talon investigating some missing HE. Shhh... But, they are finished for sure. Going to suck since they're supposedly one of two military pull-down factorys in the nation.
