I recently bought my first can (Surefire SOCOM300 SPS) and just had to try my hand at making subsonic ammo. I ended up using Hornady 190gr SubX bullets and they are averaging 1062 FPS. The rifle is a Sig Cross in .308 Win with a 16" barrel.

The first shot is a standard PMC 168gr 7.62x51mm FMJ cartridge without the can and the next two are my subsonic loads with the can.

I'm pretty happy with the results. The downside is that when you build subsonic ammo it performs more like a pistol than a rifle. My 190gr rifle loads perform very similar to my PMC 200gr 10mm ammo.

And that is why I’m working up a subsonic .45-70 load with 400 grain bullets! If you are limited by the speed of sound, I want the heaviest, fattest projectile possible. I confess it’s not nearly as quiet as your .308 though.

Use the heaviest bullets for the caliber, 230gr for a 308win. With your chrono, load them to about 1050. Bolt guns are whisper quiet. I bought a box of Lapua Subsonic for my 308. I wish I could share the video but after a half hour I gave up. Very cool and quite fun. I’ve shot them in my back yard and nobody could hear a thing (I’m on an Acre but out HOA no allow gunpowder.)

The idea was to get the Hornaday 190gr SubX bullet to work with a powder that I had on hand. 190gr SubX is advertised as a hunting bullet that expands well at subsonic velocities. While shooting at paper is useful, I like knowing that the load can be used on game if I need to use it for that purpose. I also found that powders for subsonic .308 loads are getting hard to find, so part of what I did was just a test to see if the powder I have is usable (IMR 4166).
