Considering picking up a springfield "loaded." It's got a chrome moly carbon steel barrel. What does that mean? Is it chrome lined or is it just a certain type of steel? The standard's barrel just says "carbon steel."

Hi,
I don't think a chrome moly carbon steel barrel is not chrome lined - if it is new from Springfield as they are supposedly out of GI chrome barrels. Also, last time I checked, they were not stating the barrels on there std model were chrome lined as they used to.

A way to tell if a barrel is chrome is to look into the chamber - chrome lined will be easy to spot.

Chrome-molly steel is the steel used in their NM barrels (medium weight supplied by Wilson), not to any chrome lining. Wilson makes good barrels. The SS one that came on my "Loaded" model was a tack driver and gave good accuracy for around 7K rounds. Your mileage may vary.

Since about January, 2004 Springfield Armory, Inc. has been out of USGI chromium plated M14 barrels. So, they've been installing commerical molybdenum-chromium alloy carbon steel barrels on the standard M1A rifles. These are referred to as "chrome-moly" barrels. "Chrome-moly" steel is a VERY common material for rifle barrels. The USGI M14 barrels were also "chrome-moly" barrels but were plated with chromium in the chamber and borre. HTH

im confused by everyones replies.... everyone is answering about the barrels on the standard... but he asked about the NM barrels on the "loaded".
The standard and "loaded" M1A barrels are both made from the same material, molybdenum-chromium alloy (medium carbon) steel.

The standard barrel is a thinner contour (not GI) than the NM barrel which is a medium heavy contour.
The standard barrel is USGI M14 contour.

Quag, The standard barrels are not USGI M14 contour. Look at the chamber area as there is no radius cuts on top or bottom of the barrel. They are a straight cut with a taper coming down to the small diameter of the barrel; therefore they will not fit in a USGI barrel fixture and are not USGI contour.

If you say so. They must have changed how they make them, because their std barrels used to be GI contour.
