Comparing a M1A to a sks is not even really a comparison. Unless you are 5 foot tall I'm sure the sks feels to short it the length of pull. Not to mention half ass sights and a horrible trigger. Like Rich said you will prob be ready to trade the sks to feed your new rifle. Not to mention the range limits of the 7.62x39 cartridge is roughly that of a 30-30. The sks is a good choice for a cheap shtf weapon and ammo is cheap.I have owned them myself but was never that confident with the accuracy passed about 75 yards. The sks will go bang when you pull the trigger that's about its best attribute. You will have no more doubt once you put them side by side and FEEL the quality in your new rifle.

Just my 2 cents worth.

The sks is a great little weapon. You should take it out and give it a go. Fairly accurate, quick handling, rugged as a cement mixer.
And I will add the Ammo is cheap!

Every tool box needs an assortment of good tools.
An adjustable wrench and pliers eventually gets us all into trouble with rounded corners.
Keep adding to your collection and you will be ready for anything.

These days an entry level AR can be had for about the same price as the sks. At least in my neck of the woods. At least with the AR you can built it up as you get the extra time and or money.
