What is the thinking on the Sage EBR stocks? Good or bad? And are they still available? Looks like US Tactical Supply has them.

I think the SAGE chassis is sort-of a 'love/hate topic, as its seems its often it's a binary opinion between the 'traditionalist' vs the 'modernists' enthusiasts. The favorite response I heard from an old M14 NM armorer who built both match and combat M14s in the 1990s-200Xs was this: "The SAGE chassis fixed everything that was wrong with the M14 stock for the military, but it also made the rifle three pounds too heavy in the process."

One man's opinion (this one clearly falls into the "love" category, but you can easily find detractors using the search function):
Here's my favorite SAGE chassis (Mk 14 Mod 2), which is one of my current projects.

I weighed my Sage stock (model O) against my USGI wood stock and the Sage was about a pound heavier.

I was trying out my new scale last year and weighed various stocks and rifles, here's my results:
My early black SAGE chassis w/ "Patient Pending" stamping, has the original longer fore end, and weighs 5 lb, 8 ozs. The later "chopped" stocks were a little lighter given the forend was about 1.5 inches shorter, but still weigh well over 4 lbs, and I think close to 5 lbs with the SAGE vertical grip installed, but I don't have one here to put on the scale to validate the exact weight.

Early USGI M14 stock w/ M1 buttplate weighs 2 lbs 10 ozs (almost 3 lbs less than early SAGE chassis).

The Army EBR-RI with a standard weight barrel and Leupold scope was about 15 lbs. The Navy MK 14 Mod 2 has a heavy barrel and the rifle weighs 17 lbs. (Note: Mk 14 Mod 2 chassis is heavy due to the adjustable PRS buttstock and related parts).

Fwiw, a heavy McMillan Fiberglass match M1A stock is in-between, around 4 lbs 4 ozs.

Mine weighs 16 pounds even with a full mag and the Atlas bipod. Mine has a medium weight barrel. My 3/4 heavy JAE M25 weighs 17 pounds with a full mag and a bipod.

I'll be testing this on Saturday. I've got some good groups out of SAGE chassis before. I just need a proper scope on this one.

SAGE just finished a batch. Let me know if you want one. I can get them. Just processed an order of 4 of these last week.

Any way possible you can get one for me? I’ve been looking for a while and it’s always a window shopping type of deal because I know they are always sold out. I know this is from a year ago but I stumbled across this forum and I figured I have to give it a shot. Thanks man!

Agreed on the binary feelings... over the years, i've run a half dozen Sage setups and every one of them were accurate but a tad heavy for toting around the woods. Within months of selling one, i'd get the itch to get another. Nowadays, you can't just go grab one tho.

In my opinion, there's two ways to configure a Sage. First, my favorite Sage combo is a SOCOM or Scout skinny barrel with everything stripped off the chassis. Still very accurate and can stand banging around on the 4 wheeler with no problems. Just grab and shoot. My second choice is a range toy using a medium weight and long optics for target shooting. My experience showed it does not take much tweakin' on the barrel tension screw to make a diffrence on accuracy.

Also, my preference grew toward the Mod1 variant. Saves a little weight and tends to fit my needs better.

Enjoy what path you choose.

Not sure who you are asking but my old mod1s came from Clyde Armory back when they were actively stocking Sage and the later ones came from U.S.Tactical Supply who seem to somehow keep a few EBRs in supply now and then. The mod1 buffer tube versions are a bit harder to find these days, imo.

A couple months back, i traded a mod1 and as things go, i found another i may trade or sell later. If you have trouble finding one, give me a message after Christmas and maybe it will be available since bills usually pile up in January.

Good luck in your search.
