Question: I’m considering using my M1a Nat Match for a 200yd Varmint Match. FYI the target is a 5” ring bull for score. Will an M1a NM (.308) hold it’s own against the 6.5’s and 6.8’s?
What power scope? Is Bassett mount still available. If not best replacement you recommend.
I reload and understand ballistics so don’t want to open that can of worms for discussion or optics. I have been shooting BPCR for many years and shot on Navy team 1970 so not new to shooting but young enough to know when I need to ask experts, Thanks
Jerry, Northern Nevada

Just placed order for Kensight. Gosh I wonder what more I need to do. LOL

Welcome on board Jerry, pull up an old ammunition crate and sit awhile. This here Gun Board is a great place for information on our beloved M14 Battle rifle and military surplus ammunition for feeding her. Again, welcome on board and have yourself a great week. Heroism is endurance for just one moment more. My NM and Loaded M1A's.

Bassett is ☠💀☠ so I would go with a Sadlak (steel), Kensight, or Brookfield mount, along with a Sadlak NM spring guide.

Thank you for your service 🫡
Welcome from North Carolina. You have no idea what you’re in for concerning the M14/ M1A platform, they just multiply in your gun safe quicker than rabbits do, don’t ask me how I know that one 😉. This is a very helpful and informative forum for just about anything that you can think of, but mainly the M14/ M1A. Ask any and all questions that you have and you’ll get answers from the experts. Check out all the different threads here, but you better get comfortable in your chair first. Once you reach the “magical” number of 50 posts, you’ll have access to the PX (M14/ M1A goodies) and the BX (everything else you can possibly think of), and then be prepared for the severe beating that your banking account will take, ask anyone here about that one if you don’t believe me.

Thank you for your kind post. I was a cowboy shooter for years and have 4 safes of SASS guns. We lost our range and now shooting with them new fangled irons. I bought the NM 8-10 years ago just to say I have one. And now I have a use. I also thought about my 1903-A4 but that scope is G73 2.5 and I don’t want to upset original config. Again Thank You.

Sadlak steel mount. 10x will do the trick. If you go variable scope, don’t choose one that you’ll use the highest magnification all the time. A 3x 15 that can handle the recoil over time is your variable scope recommendation IMHO. 10x fixed scope. 200 yds on a 5” plate should be well within the rifle’s easy zone and we know the guy behind it can make that happen.
Welcome and have fun!!!

What we’re shooting is a 3/4” X and target rings scored 9.8.7.etc The whole target is 5”. I saw most top shooters were 4 for 5 in the white. We got some precision shooters but I only want to not embarrass myself. I thought about getting a Ruger Precision 2400.00 but I love my M1a. I shot my own NM M1 in Navy but was the year (1970) the team started using M16’s Poohy!

Thank you so much. Visual worth is everything. I have a stash of Hornady 168 BTHP and 178 BTHP. I can’t start loads til I do some work ups. I bought 16lbs of 3031 during last shortage so that’s what I’m shooting. A tip for Ya. I have been using a Caldwell Chronograph but got an Athlon last month. Like it a lot. No more shooting through rods and can monitor from the bench. Thanks again
