Has anybody run across any of this ammo. LC17 5.56 ball with aluminum cases. I was at the range the other day and some people next to me were shooting this ammunition. I have never seen these and found nothing searching the internet. It is not steel or nickle plated.

The linked Bud's Gun Shop ammo... seems kinda funky to me.. why would anyone go to the trouble to "TinStain" perfectly good brass cases.

Seems kind of dubious.

They might be fine, I don't know... but it worries me when it is difficult to look up a Ammo manufacturer.

L-Tech Enterprises Inc. ?

There has always been a problem with aluminum cases in 5.56mm and 7.62mm which has yet to be solved - burn through.

As a report wonderfully under-stated:

When a mechanical case failure is encountered during the firing of aluminum cased ammunition, particularly with high-pressure, high-performance weapon systems, the failure of an aluminum cartridge case is characterized by a large efflux of very luminous gases at the breech of the weapon, the serious erosion of the cartridge case, and often, the inability of the weapon to function properly thereafter. Thus, this failure may result in serious harm to the rifleman and damage the weapon....

...it was found that ... a four thousands deep longitudinal scratch would, upon firing, result in "burn-through".
There are several reports on this from the 1950s through the 1970 with numerous pictures of M14s, M60s and M16 wrecked by melted aluminum case heads.

Many solutions have been proposed, from plastic inserts to special coatings, but these result in the loss on internal volume and reduced ballistic performance.

Other than the giant 30mm and 35mm cases, the military has given up on that line.

I can't imagine people shooting proof rounds one right after the other at the range. On the box they are usually marked as dangerous. I'm guessing they were newbies and got the ammo from some idiot that took them out of the box. I know they're military but they should still be stamped "proof", someone could've got hurt. Safety second or third lol.

They were very sold as proof rds . There was a large surplus of LC 17 nickel brass that was sold to the civilian/surplus market. Not sure if this brass was out of spec/didn’t meet all the QC requirements or just excess??? I know that On target ammo was selling 223/5:56 loaded in these cases earlier this year . I believe they stopped because it was to labor intensive to polish cases etc . The virgin brass before polishing looks like kinda like it’s galvanized . That’s also why sages reloading sold it so cheap

Winchester tried pushing nickel plated 223 some time ago,
Looks like lake city just did not polish their brass.

I dont really get the nickel plate , more expensive , more work and in the end why, other than hunting rounds that may take 30 years to shoot 20 rounds!

If its cheap enough I dont care but im,not paying more for bulk LC because Nickel.

If any of you shoot 762x39 or steel cased ammo , have you seen the zinc plated bullets and cases.

Theoretically, it's for better cycling and chambering. Hornady puts their defensive ammos in nickle brass... and, for a while, they even put their TAP (tacticool ammo) in blacked-out nickle brass.

Must have worked super good as its the stuff to have now .....sarcasim meter high emoji here.
Hornady also put out steel cased match ammo?
does not seem to be that much of advantage over all.
Yeah maybe for carry pistols where your ammo might not circulate much.
I did buy a revolver where the cases had "tarnished" themselves tight into the cylinders. All the rounds went bang which made tapping the stuck brass out much easier.

Plus the Zinc plated steel stuff thats out there.
