Hope I've put this in the correct forum,my apologies if I haven't. I use mostly Hoppe's powder solvent for cleaning my M1A and other guns, but sometimes use J-B bore paste if they need are really bad. Does anyone here use the J-B stuff and can tell me if it has a long or short shelf life. I went to clean one of my rifles the other day and the J-B stuff was kind of hard and the color had darkened a bit. I didn't know if it would be good to use it in that condition.

It's basically polishing media and oil so it may dry, but I don't think it "spoils".

I work out of the same jar (blue one) from Brownells over 5 yrs. ago. It was never white... more like a brownish gray to begin with, but don't remember the consistency of it new. The data sheet doesn't spec shelf life and don't know who actually manufactures JB products as the jar shows 'licensed to Brownells". Brownell's tech support should be able to break the tie: 800-741-0015.

JB is awesome. A Kroil soak and a patch scrub with JB is the only cleaning method I have found that will get your bore squeaky clean.

My tin from a year or so ago is still gray and it's consistency hasn't changed.

It is basically a very fine grit abrasive material. It may be alumina? Not sure, but the abrasive material has a lower hardness than steel/chrome. It has other stuff in it -some copper cutting agent and a low viscosity oil. If it dries out, just add some oil.

I've gone through almost a whole jar in the last two years. I use it to break in rifle barrels the recommended way (the very slow, painstaking way)...and also just for routine cleaning. I usually run a few patches of Hoppes spread out over a day or two, then a fresh soaked patch of Hoppes, then a well coated patch with JB and run that through about 5-10 times and flip the patch around for the last pass, then another patch of Hoppes. after all that, I let it sit for a few more hours and run a few more patches through until it's clean.

very rarely I have to use it twice for the same barrel cleaning in between range trips.

I agree. I don't use it for routine cleaning.

After running about 400-500 rounds through my suppressed SP01 the past couple weeks, JB was great at getting that last garbage out. It is mind boggling how dirty suppressors make guns -I was surprised to see the bore much worse than usual... the action didn't surprise me.

I generally use a mix of Hoppes/Kroil and then sometimes MPro 7. M Pro 7 is probably the easiest and fastest solvent to get your bore fairly cleaned up. It is water based though (not a huge fan of that), so it isn't miscible with other cleaning solvents. It also washes up well. But man do I love the smell of Hoppes and Kroil...
