Just got it for the length.
Waiting on my midlength barrel to ship.
Something like this. Not mine. Just where I'm heading

http://www.charleyssurplus.com/

Don't give up looking for it. They are there. I ordered one last Friday and got it a couple days ago (mine looked like it was never used.)

The search engine at Charley's is nothing to brag about. I just spent 10 minutes or so looking for them using the words butt stock, M16, M16A1, A1, butt, stock, rifle, etc. with no look. I've been through pages and pages without seeing the butt stock. I guess I'm lucky I found it last week, but don't remember how I did it.

Ordered one today myself. Gerald answered the phone and was very nice as opposed to some guys on the phone.

The butt plate looks like an a2 from the pic in the thread? Can the OP confirm?

It's not an A2 stock. It's about 3/4" shorter than an A2 stock.

You can use the same buffer tube, spring and buffer as you would with an A2 stock though.

You'll either need an A1 screw (upper) or take an A2 screw and cut the end off, then smooth off the rough edges. The A2 screw wills stick through the end of the buffer tube and keep the buffer from moving completely rearward.

Here's my mid winter build with my A1 stock from Charley's surplus. As other's have said, it's just more comfortable with that little bit shorter stock (vs. the A2 stock).

Nice rifle.

I was making comment on the butt plate itself. From the side it looks textured like an a2 butpltplate as opposed to the smooth a1 butt plate. Either way is fine, just curious.

yep, sounds like an A2 butt plate--the A1 plates were smooth to my knowledge., Still a nice stock and great price. A1 butt plates are cheap and everywhere.

Received mine today. Sealed in a clear wrap material. The butt plate is an A2. Overall the stock is excellent plus shape. The sling loop is either new or reparked. You might find another such stock in better shape but you will look for awhile IF you find one and you will pay more for it.

Thank you!

I found this forum while performing a random search for surplus A1 buttstocks. I just wanted to thank you guys for helping me find the best deal/condition A1 stock I've ever come across. I called Charley's on Tuesday to inquire about the stocks as I was unable to find them on the website. (He later informed me that they are not on the website.) He had one left so I jumped. Mine also has the A2 buttplate, metal trapdoor, new sling swivel, matte black, and in much better condition than I imagined.

Thanks again for the heads-up!

A1 buttplates were not smooth; they were checkered. A2 buttplates are very similar, but they seem to have a more agressive checkering that many prefer.

I have an M16 buttstock, Triangle handguard, and a pistol grip. All old school USGI. Thinking about selling it since my plans to build the only AR I am interested in has been put on the far far far back burner because of the multitude of M14's I have planned. If anyone is interested in buying it shoot me a PM.

Now I don't know much about M16's (I am an M14 lover) but I do know that it is a USGI from an A1 or earlier model. The pistol grip was made by some company during the 60's that probably make refrigerators now or something.

Sarco has ad for 03 all the time, you guys that have been there are they any good?
I ordered from them before, you usually get what you pay for, they've been around for a long time, seem to have warehouses full of old surplus items & gun parts that are hard to find...

For me, the A1 length is the best. Just recently I put another fixed A1 rifle together. The stock came from Fulton Armory.
It's a good stock, but it has a different shape and storage compartment. It's a coin toss between the two stocks really.

I bought several A1 stocks from Charlies over the years. So far I've been happy with them all.
