Getting ready to mount the scope on my M1A. Who produces the best one in steel or aluminum?

Arms 18 or Basset.
Arms 18 for a dedicated scoped rifle.
Basset Low 1913 if you want to swap between Irons and Scoped. Trust me, it works and holds Zero very very well. Just don't loose the tool.

I think sadlak is safe to also add to the list even though I prefer Basset over all. The sadlak is a decent mount as is the Arms 18.

If you do lose the tool for the basset then just have a M14 combination tool in your butt-stock. It also works as the basset bolt is the same size as the gas plug.

I vote Basset!

I can't wait until October!!

I am very happy with my ARMS-18, which was very highly regarded eight years ago.
Sorry, but I'm not expecting anyone to toss their current mounts. If a mount fits and works on your rifle, obviously keep it.

But mine is a "universal" optic mount for any out-of-spec M14. Especially custom fitting to receiver grooves, squared to the receiver and can't contact the hand guard. Among other things.

But like I said- not intended to be a replacement.

Now back to my Shed (That's a smooooooooooooooth Vermont "rugged brown ale")

100%.
Brand Xs tend to pile up in the parts drawer after proving to be less than satisfactory. Most don't even make good paper weights.

I don't have one but I don't like them. Here's why; I don't like the fact that you have to delete the rear sight to have it on. The mount has a hole in it to see the front sight thru but, you have no adjustments, it's just there. You have to accept wherever the bullet impacts if you use it.

Aesthetically, I like an M14 to look like an M14 and, removing the rear sight wrecks it for me.

The other reason is that, because the mount is only secured to the rifle at the rear sight area, and the front just rests on the receiver ring (perhaps under some tension) but is not really secured in any way, I don't trust that the thing will not move up and down during recoil.

Especially if you have a heavy optic attached to it. It just has to have some movement under firing. I refuse to believe otherwise.

SEI, SADLAK, ARMS 18 are the best IMO. Sorry to you Bassett guys but, I think that thing is a rather hokey accoutrement also.

Best M1A scope mount?
I have a Springfield Armory third generation scope mount on my NM. I have personally fired >16,500 rounds down range and only had it come loose just once when I didn't tightened it up correctly about ten years ago. I take it off once a year to do a total cleaning of my rifle, once replaced it's still holds the rifle zero. I even changed out the furniture (Wade custom shop), it still held it's original zero on the range out to 750 yards.

I have never used a Sadlak, Basset, Knight's Armament or A.R.M.S. #18 type mounts. But I have heard there good as well.

Just a different point of view hurryinhoosier to consider.

I have a Bassett low pic mount with Seekins low rings, lapped after everything was torqued up. A Leupold VX-R 3-9x50 clears but just barely. Only have a few hunnerd rounds with it but holding solid. Haven't tested repeatability after removing and reinstalling, but I don't intend to do that. It'll stay on until it must come off. I like that I have rapid access to the irons if the scope is out of commission.
