Your started off with 'legality'.
The OP stated he has built Cans on BATFE Form 1's...which I also have.
That makes it 100% LEGAL!
Next you are talking about how EFFECTIVE they are...
MY Answer=VERY!
Complete? No, Not Ever.
Next Question?
You really need to hook up with a fellow shooter who can demonstrate to you how SUPPRESSORS/SOUND MODERATORS(NOT Silencers) in multiple calibers, on multiple platforms....actually WORK!
I Personally Guarantee You......You WILL Learn Something!

So, if I understand you, surpressed is NOT silenced, but you still have to pay the damn tax???? I was hoping NOT to pay tax on surpressed but I expected to pay damn tax on slienced weapons. I guess ATAF just needs to money???

No...What I was attempting to state was that there is really no such thing as Completely SILENCED.
They are better referred to as Suppressors, or in other countries---Sound Reducers or Sound Modifiers.
Re: The NFA and the BATFE---They Are Suppressors, and they are Class III Items under the NFA, and they do require the one-time $200 Tax Stamp!

Here are some definitions for you;

The terms “firearm silencer” and “firearm muffler” mean any device for silencing, muffling, or diminishing the report of a portable firearm, including any combination of parts, designed or redesigned, and intended for use in assembling or fabricating a firearm silencer or firearm muffler, and any part intended only for use in such assembly or fabrication.
Any device intended to reduce gun noise by any amount can be defined as a silencer. The BATFE has made exceptions for devices like the MetroGun shotgun extension tubes, bloop tubes (like you see on Olympic style target rifles), large boxes or barrels not attached to the firearm (I have a letter) and other things they feel are not intended to be used as a muffler. If you look up the definition of a firearm in the US code you will see that a silencer is also a firearm.

It is not about the money. It is strictly about reducing the number of people who are willing to own them. $200 in 1934 is about $3500 today. The ATF is considering expanding the sheriff's signature (which can be denied for any reason at all) to include trusts and corporations. The BATFE is not our friend, they are about tax collections and putting up obstacles to own guns.

Some awesome information in here and I thank you all for posting. I just recently (by recently I mean today) expressed interest in owning a supressor for my M1A and I was very curious about it. The I cant decide is do I want QD and have to eirth lose my front sight or movie it to the gas lock (I have a 22" barrel) or keep it and get an adapter. That is going to take some time for me to decide lol.

I went with Surefire's setup for my M1A & .300 Win. Mag Remington 700. I can swap my FA762SS between both in seconds. I loose the traditional FS setup but I have no issues with the GLFS setup I have now. ( and I like the reduction in OAL when the can is attached)

If I was using a direct thread suppressor I would use the Delta P or SEI adaptor without a second thought. ETA; that's only if I was dead set on keeping the classic front sight location.
