Hey all

I'm building my first AR first meaning first i have ever owned as well. I was looking around for a set of irons to put on the build but i had a mini heart attack seeing how much they cost for just a front or rear.

Overall build is a 20" HBAR with a flat top, a free float handguard and A2 stock. I'm building this rifle to start to learn how to shoot irons for cmp matches in the future.

Any thoughts or suggestions on what i should get that wont make my wallet spontaneously combust?

Thanks!

For what you want, fixed sights may work out best.
As suggested, a carry handle option will work.
Something like this may work also;

UTG super Slim fixed rear sight matched with a Troy HK style fixed front sight.

Couple of pictures of the UTG Super Slim fixed rear sight.

The UTG Super Slim fixed rear sight can be had for around $34.00
It is actually a good fixed rear sight. I also have a RRA stand alone rear sight.

The RRA stand alone rear sight is built like a tank. And it is also in the $100.00 price range.

The Troy HK style front sight is more of a personal choice.
I like the HK style over the standard front sight style.
The Troy HK can be had in the $50.00 to $60.00 price range.

Hope this helps,
Glenn

If you are talking about White Oak or Compas Lake carry handles for around $180, yes they are pricey. However, you are looking at a need for precision, repeatable sight movement at 600yds.

GI sights don't provide a great sight picture and are somewhat crude at 1 MOA movement for elevation and windage.

A cost-effective solution may be to get a used GI carry handle, upgrade the rear aperture and buy a NM front sight post.

I hate too be the wet blanket but if your going too run irons with the AR it needs too be the full carry handle type. The ones available from Amazon are cheap made in China knock offs so find a take off USGI with 1/2x1/2 adjustments or flip the coin and get the Rock River with 1/4x1/4 adjustments.

Johnb2488 has a nice complete carry handle up for grabs at a very attractive price.

Do a CAREFULL reading of the rules about what rifle configurations are allowed for the various matches - there are many small gotcha details!

And many matches now allow scopes (and they have their own rule details).

While iron sights have appeal for many people, the fact is that most match shooters do at least as well (many better) with scopes than irons. But 'yes' good scopes are expensive ...

Choose wisely, knowing how you will be using the equipment - don't get stuck buying items that aren't allowed in your chosen events.

The front sight is an easy answer. Take any front sight post that you have. Chuck the threaded part into a drill. Run it across a fine file until you have reached your preferred thickness. Mine is .03 something. That will save you $30 each while searching for your preference. The rear sight is much different. A2 nm sights are pricey period. Try rock river first. A4 nm are even worse. They will need to be shipped out to be pinned. I think keystone does this.

Thank you all for the thoughts and suggestions.

I don't mind spending money on a good quality rear sight And the rock river 1/4 1/4 carry handle looks like an excellent choice and seems like it will last a lifetime.

The heart attack comes in where i see a tiny little rear sight retailing for 65+ dollars for a little block of aluminum or a magpul flip up sight retailing for just about the same. For me personally "in my mind" do not seem like the cost to perceived value ratio of these commercial sights work for me.

I'll probably end up with a rock river or GI carry handle unless i'm convinced otherwise that other sights are worth the coin.

your mindset and everything you have to say in this post is 100% true. Shooting Atc will open up your mindset to the true capacity of the nm ar rifle. Shooting atc will teach natural point of aim, windage reads, distance dope/ dialing and so much more that will migrate into you other weapons and shooting habits. Drop the dough and come on in, the waters warm. It really dosnt matter where your from, i promise you will meet people that will become life long friends. Just beware, it is another addiction. I give it two years before you go with a scoped rifle. $65.... Ha. Ill take two.

I've found a couple new take-off Colt carry handle sights within the last year for $65 and $75. They are readily available, as indicated in the above post.

I donn't know the rules for CMP competition, but certainly a standard carry handle would qualify. There may be other better options that are allowed.

I really like the standard style of irons used by both the M14 and M16/AR15 style rifles.
Ive been using a standard FSB gas block and carry handle but recently went to a low profile gas block so have to come up with somethign else. Just got in a Skalarworks rear sight and am waiting on a front to come off backorder. I like that its very similar to the standard sights but with a thinner front post for the shorter sight radius and much lighter weight. Havent gotten any use out of them yet but they seem fairly tough and the machining is nice. Defintely not cheap though.

If its for competition. Im not sure as Im not familiar with the rulesets. Stick with whats known to work

If you belong to a club or plan to compete, talk to other shooters/competitors and see what they're using. They'll probably be happy to let you try out their rifles so you can form an informed opinion. With any kind of precision item - tool, sight, instrument, I firmly believe in the 'buy once, cry once' philosophy. There's nothing more expensive than cheap equipment!

If you plan on shooting matches, read the specific rule book first. If you plan on shooting in NRA or CMP Service Rifle Matches, get an A4 handle with pinned 1/4 minute sights from WOA. If you want specifics, call John Holliger at White Oak Armament. He is a top NRA and CMP Competitor and is very knowledgeable.

John Scandel (sp?) at Keystone Armory (Arsenal?) probably offers much of the same thing. (Scandale?)

CMP has a couple of rule books on AR15/M16s. Service Rifle and "Games." Make sure to read the right one. Both are available on-line.

Good luck and good shooting!

I agree that pinned rear sights from either Keystone or WOA are very precise, but that a serious cost/upgrade to a good NM rear sight that a beginner really doesn't need.

It is a dilemma for someone getting into CMP and NRA. They wonder if basic GI stuff is fine for 100 or 200yd matches, but will it work OK at full distance? How much do I really need to spend or is there good value equipment that fits a beginner's needs?

Most of the High Masters have top of the line stuff, but I also see a lot of Sharpshooters with equally expensive high-end equipment. Money that would have been better spent on ammo and practice.

I dunno, basic stuff will work on short matches until you actually know you want to really get into the sport. Then you will need better stuff but will also have a better idea what you really need.

Yeah no kidding. I took off a set of MBUS one of those Magpul plastic pop up sights off my Kriss Vector Carbine in 10mm. Had to take them off because of my fat cheek kept making the Vector to the right. So off they came.

Needed to price them so I know what to ask. Priced them on line and when I saw the price I said to myself. Self you must put that PBR down. Checked a few more places and I guess that's the going rate. Here I though 30-40 bucks maybe $45 new. At $50 used once I could sell them all day long. Crazy what people pay for plastic.

Picked up a set of colt takeoffs along with some other stuff from a fellow forum member. I'll be sure to post a range report when i get the rifle built. Hopefully my barrel and bolt will come in this week so i can have it built and ready for the range this weekend. Thank you all for the words of wisdom and suggestions!

I need to look into getting some of these rear sights. What do you suggest, the UTG or RRA ???
