I see the micro managers have closed the threads in another parts of the forum regarding the FAL and G3 compared to our beloved M14. That's OK since it's their job to make sure things don't get too stirred up in our posts.
That said, maybe I can get away with making a comment here. I just got through cleaning and lubricating two HK rifles. One is a HK91A3 and the other a HK940 (.30-06 hunting rifle). Both have the same type of bolt assemblies.
I'm an easy going type of guy, but I pulled a lot of hair out trying to get these rifles reassembled after cleaning. If you don't believe that just check out a picture of me... I can appreciate the close tolerances of the bolt assemblies, but I would hate to have to service these rifles in the field. Coupled with the 30 feet or so that the HK91 throws the brass and the fluted chamber that make reloading interesting, I think I will stick with the M14.
I have handled the FAL in the past. I think it's a cool rifle, but it doesn't compare with the M14 for accuracy or the M14's superior sights. I didn't find it as comfortable to shoot either. On the other hand I was happy to see some of the British troops I worked with armed with FAL's during Desert Storm.
I guess they all make good battle rifles. I just know what I like.
