The M14 definitely has better sights and a better trigger than the FAL, and is WAY more accurate. The FAL is easier to field strip for cleaning and lube. Having never used either in combat, I cannot state an opinion there. But then again, not many people have used both in combat.

I have also handled a FAL, the grip angle is all wrong, I just did not like it, I

Replacing the (metric) FAL pistol grip with an M249 SAW pistol grip results in a much, much better grip angle. You can't do that with an inch (L1A1 or SLR) version rifle.
