Long side trip! I took a rifle that I thought had 4K rounds. It quit shooting midway through the match. Borescoped and if I could have taken pictures they would be on Wiki for "shot out barrel".
Double checking bullet inventory and orders, the barrel had 5K+ rounds.
Don't worry M14 shooters. Your barrels will last quite a bit longer than that. A steady diet of 46.2g of Varget is much tougher on a barrel than the typical M14 load.

Swing by Bruno's for another tube?

Phil encouraged me to post here and share my rifle with everyone. I will start by saying that this is not a rifle built by Mr. McCoy, but rather my interpretation from pictures and anecdotal facts about his rifles and their construction. While the rifle is complete, there is still a lot of fine-tuning and load development to be done. I can only hope that one day this recreation will stand the test of time like his rifles have. A few pics are in the post and the rest are in the photobucket link below.

Here is my build thread so I don't detract from the intention of this thread.

I will be doing a lot more testing this summer now that Michigan weather is breaking. I don't have any real range report besides the EIC match I shot a while back where I managed a 464, which ended up being only 5 points away from the top shooter who got points that day. I need to fine tune the trigger, get a load and shoot shoot shoot.

464 is excellent with a Garand.

Finally. Here are the promised Pics. Couple of weeks late.

Wolley,

IMHO, the better secret is the rear sight that Don did on that rifle. The other 2 rifles he did for me are nowhere near as good as that one. I had to do a lot of rear sight work on my other 2 McCoy guns before I felt confident with them in matches. The backlash on the M1/M14 rear sight is one of the shortcomings of these rifles. If you really want to know how good your rear sights are, stick a dial indicator and crank the windage knob like you would in a match in a switching mild conditions.

Wolley you overlooked my rear sight because:

It has the same McCoy Modification your M1 has, this Mod has been kept a reasonable secret for over 60 years, lets hope it stays that way. It gives the shooter an advantage those without do not have, certainly not cheating, but why share your knowledge in competition... Stingy old men in Texas... Art

Because I was more fascinated by the vacuum impregnated stock and the ART scope.
I have made a few inquiries and it is still possible to have a stock impregnated/stabilized for a fairly reasonable amount. I am probably going to send one to be done before long. I was told 100% penetration with a stock was no problem.

I can't wait to try out the rear sight I have with this McCoy mod. It may not make me shoot any better, but as long as I think I am shooting better I will be happy. I hope to one day be able to out-shoot my match rifle, but for now I am happy and enjoying learning and practicing.

Geez, I was hoping one of you Real McCoy M1 owners would notice the new sticky in the M1 Garand Accuracy sub-forum by now, it's been live for almost 2 hours....

XXIVCorps and Murphy made it happen, that's what The Big Guns and Murphy's are for...

Thank you, both.
