There is actually a thead about this here on the forum, go look at that for more stories.

My M14 has taken out many critters but never got the chance to use it on a deer, it certinly is a heavy thing to carry around so sitting in a stand makes much more since.

Good Shooting.

Mayby its the same in sweden?,but i only got an 10 round magazine
they dont sell 5 rounds here in europe
the alternative is that i make the 10 round to an 5 round magazine(its easy)

I wish Pennsylvania would come out of the stone age and let us use semi-auto's for deer.

I wouyld love nothing more than to use my Standard M1A to take a deer.

The State Game officials some how fear 900,000 hunters in the woods for rifle season armed with auto loaders...

Its forbidden to hunt with semi auto,s in Denmark, that,s why i go to Sweden,,and offcause i got family living there,,so hunting is cheap for me,,
otherwise you have to pay big bucks for deer hunting

I just weighed them and my Scout Squad is only about 2 lbs heavier than my T/C Hawken .54 and I've packed that girl many a mile without a sling, deer and elk hunting here in the high timber of CO. So I don't think the M1A would be too heavy to hunt with. If I don't draw the muzzle loader tag I applied for I will try hunting with the Scout this year.

later, dozer

p.s. with a 348gr aero tip driven by 110gr of Pyrodex, they drop right where you hit them

Hunters in Sweden often hunt deer and larger game with the old 6.5 x 55 round. At 140 grain bullets it shoots a little flatter than 150 grains in .308 but you'll have plenty enough gun if it's legal to hunt with. The deer won't notice the difference.

I've been carrying my M14 out into the woods all the time just for protection and I don't feel the weight is a huge issue, though I have an 18.5" barrel (which DOES help me get around brush and obstacles) and a fiberglass stock.

Though I will be switching to an 1866 with the same length barrel soon, which will be lighter, and pack a bigger punch for bears and moose. But for deer hunting, I'd still bring either the M14 or the Mauser 98k.

My point was to contest the weight comments. And since you're asking, it sounds like the weight isn't an issue to you anyways

My mind keeps going back to hunting deer with M1s on Band of Brothers in the Alps

When I lived in WV the two rifles I deer hunted with most where my M1A and my 03A4. The A4 for those pretty days when I was going to find a good spot to sit down and wait on the deer to walk out where I could see them and the M1A for the days when I would be moving around some.

I never thought the M1A was "heavy" but then again I was in my early 20's and I'd been carting an M14 around for 4 years in the US Army. If you carry it you get used to carrying it. I never knew my duty belt/gun/etc. weight 13.5 lbs. till my partner got to wondering how much it weighed one evening and we put it on the scales. You get used to it.

Deer don't know what kind of rifle the .30 caliber bullets came from when you hit the right spot.

I hunted with a Garand for few years. Now I hunt with a Remington 742 carbine. I think I will take out the M1A this year. I humped a M-60 when I was at Ft Hood. After that the weight of a Garand or M1A is not an issue.

Dropped a 6 point and a big ol' doe this past season with my E2 laminated Scout. Carries well even on the 4 wheeler we use to get to the back 80. Shots range mostly from 30 to 220 yards so the 150 grainers sighted in about an inch high at a hundred is meat on the table when something steps out. And yeah, you wanna get a 5-rounder. Wildlife do right boys tend to get nervous when they see the 50 round drums. I know i would.

If your M14 is 8 kilograms, you need to take all the Tapco crap off of it.

I have hunted for several years with my M1As and have put many deer in the freezer. This year I plan to hunt most of the season with one of my M1 Garands here in Georgia. The M1A is a fine rifle for hunting and I just don't worry about the weight since almost all my hunting is from a stand.

I hate to take my m14 out in the weather. I purchased my russian izmash saiga's in 223 & 308 just for that purpose. But i mainly bear hunt with my 338win mag (700) anyhoo. But because of the high cost of 338wm ammo i may take two or 3 calibers to my stand this year. I hate to waste expensive bullets on yotes/small game.

Shot a small doe last weekend at 25 yards with a Federal 7.62x51, 168 grain, OTM bullet. You could barely see the entry wound, but the exit wound was larger than a baseball. I hit her right behind the front right shoulder and it exited out the other shoulder causing major trauma. When hit, she mule kicked, ran about 30 yards right pass me, circled once in place, fell, and fully expired about 20 seconds later. I shot a doe the year before at 50 yards with a Federal 147 grain FMJ bullet, and she went about 40 yards. Same major trauma on exit side.

I hunted deer with my M1A when I was younger. It killed three of em for me. I never noticed the weight.
By the way, everyone from my mother's side of the family is from Denmark. My grandmother could speak the language.

Good Luck on the hunt.
