combat type sling for M1A

I need a sling for my rifle. It's not very effective from unsupported positions without one.

I know the standard leather match/marksmanship type sling is real popular at rifle matches...but this is more of a fighting tool for me (not that I have a fight at the moment, but I figure the only real purpose for arms is fighting and if I'm training with a rifle I'm training to fight...not to score high). So I'm sort of leaning toward a more combat/tactical type sling. Like this.

My only experience with them is on an M4 that I shot one weekend at a tactical training school. It was the kind of sling that leaves the rifle in front of your body in the low ready/sul position.

Is that same type sling at all practical for a full length M1A?

Are there any brands/slings that you guys prefer over another?

I'd like to hear from you before I go out and waste money on the wrong thing.

That Specter sling you linked is what I have on my AR-15 Dissipator, and I think it would be great on an M-14, especially a Bush/Scout configuration. It is a very versatile sling - see their page on positions:

The Safari sling from Cabela's looks great, too, but I have no experience with it.

combat sling..........

I have the Spectergear 3 point tactical sling on my SA M1A. It works great for me. The sling holds the rifle horizontally, allowing for a comfortable carry and lets you fire from the hip. Without adjustment, just push the buttstock away from your body and sling tension holds the rifle at a hands free "port arms" position tight to your chest, for a comfortable carry. Also without adjustment you can sling the rifle to your backside with the buttstock up and muzzel down, again for a hands free comfortable carry. From this position your rifle can quickly be brought forward to a firing from the hip position. Also, there is enough slack in sling to bring the rifle to your shoulder to fire off hand from the horizontal carry position. I had the safari sling from Cabellas on my rifle, but when I saw the Spectergear sling I quickly changed over. Its stronger, and much more versatile :ARM34:[/IMG]

a 3 point sling tends to get in the way of the magazine or bolt stop at the worst possible time. firing from the hip is usually not practical for the M1A. it's a battle rifle, not a spray-n-pray machine gun.

unless you're tall, a full length barrel with a 1 point sling carries too low.

i like to stick with the 2 point sling. TacticalIntervention makes a good one. i normally use it with hasty carry; or for precision shooting, use the bicep cuff.
