Which Mount? ARMS or SMITH.

1355 Views 10 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  cabinetman
I am trying to figure out which one to get for my project M14. I would like to have a nice solid scope mount and one that dont raise it so much where the cheek weld will be poor.

And where is the best place to order a Smith mount from?

If you have a recent SA, get the Smith. If not, get the ARMS. The ARMS won't fit the groove of my receiver and when I did mount it it caught brass between the mount and the op rod. Although the Smith caught rounds too, it offers a little more room and I am changing out my bolt parts.

The best price I found on the Smith is to get it directly from them Smithenterprise.com. $225

Best price on ARMS is Fulton Armory. $170

Timanator I guess it depends on how deep your pockets are.
Either mount is real good, I like the early ARMS myself. It's like
M1A_Owner posted...if the receiver is out of spec then the
Smith would be a better choice.
I have a Polytech M14. Just trying to get a setup where the scope wont be too high above the barrel for good cheek weld.

Any suggestions on scope rings? I am using the Bushnell Fixed 10X mil dot 1 inch tube scope. Maybe ARMS #22 low?
I have the same scope. With the ARMS mount I used Weaver Grand Slam medium rings.

I emailed Walt once about the ring height for that scope with the ARMS mount and ARMS rings and he said medium ARMS rings. I chose not to go with the ARMS rings due to price.

The ARMS mount will probably work for you, it is nice and low and only has a problem with SA Inc. receivers that I know of.

Thanks for the reply. BTW, why ddint you buy the Weaver low mounts?
The Weaver Grand Slam rings aren't available any lower than medium.

Besides, the Bushnell Elite 3200 with 10X Mildot is a big scope and the ARMS is awfully low. With the Grand Slam medium rings and the ARMS mount my Bushnell cleared by only about 1/8 - 1/4 inch. If I used the lows it would have been touching the handguard, which is not good.

Good reason. I dont think the Weaver series ring looks very sturdy. I might opt for some Badger or "gasp" Larue rings.
Actually, I found a better price......

......and....shipping is included.

Try here for an ARMS #18 mount:

I just ordered one.

Beg to differ, But Frank Sottile over at Warrifles has them for I believe $157.50
Hi guys. I just received the one I ordered from Elite and since there was no shipping, it was $164 to my door. $157 is a great price, too!

That mount is wonderful the way it connects to the rifle. It's a solid as a rock and I was able to get it my my Polytech in about 10 minutes. It would have been sooner but I didn't realize that the pin holding on the stripper guide had to be punched up from under the receiver, not from the top down. Duh!

After that the instructions were clear and I couldn't be more pleased.
