loading 147 grain fjm's, and have the choice of using either the seating/crimp die (Redding), a Lee taper crimp, or a Lee Factory Crimp die. All cases are trimmed to 2.004; which of the three would be best?
I don't know which is best but in all my semi's I use the Lee Factory. I've checked accuracy with it as opposed to no crimp, with the crimp is slightly better. YMMV I know many don't crimp at all and it seems to work for them. I just feel better knowing I haven't shoved a bullet back on the ramp...O.L.
If you properly size you do not need to crimp. That being said, I use the Lee Factory set very light in my Dillon to fill the 4th hole. Everyone makes a mistake while sizing once in awhile. GI2
Personaly i have very good results with TC a slight Taper Crimp.
But you have to be sure all cases are the exact the same lenght !!
That will keep you crimping consistent.
Also helps feeding !!
The only rifle cartridges I crimp are those used in lever guns: 1886, 1873, 1892, and 1894. Have never crimped handloaded cartridges for the M1A's, M1's, AR15 rifles. HTH
