I jut got a call from my dealer telling me my Scout is in.

I am very inexperienced with rifles (mostly a shotgunner and handgunner), what should I check on the M1A while I'm at the store just to make sure everything is on order?

Thanks.

Not a whole lot really. Make sure the front sight/muzzle brake assembly is tight. You can check out some of the parts to see if you got any GI stuff, but I would imagine everything is new production at this point.

One thing to check is if the barrel is properly indexed. When it is, the front sight should not be canted sideways in either direction relative to the rear sight. Check out the last of the pictures in this thread: http://www.m14tfl.com/upload/showthread.php?t=67706. Look in the box for a tag from Springfield listing that rifle's head space. And plan on field stripping and properly lubricating it.

Turns out I didn't even take it out of the box in the store. I was OK with that, since I figured SA would cover any defects with the warranty. I'm still in the process of reading the manuals before I take it to the range, but I must confess to dry firing it a few times with my snap caps in the mean time.

SA seems to be very anti-field stripping in their manual, but from what I've read I should probably wipe off the shipping oils andput a very light dab of grease on the friction points before I start shooting. Since I don't have a bedded stock, I guess it should be ok.

the national match and super match models should have complete take downs kept to a minimum, due to the nature of the glass bedding.
i would go through this linky, it has lots of good stuff for us newbies.
congrats on the new addition.

Definitely read all the necessary what to do and also the what not to do threads and primary info you can here. Also like alot of guys recommend and I followed there advice here too, get Scott Duff book on M14. Even though you might not be match conditioning which the book seems to forte on, it is a staple read to have for alot of questions.

Congrats on the new Scout, I have one too and like it a lot.

As someone pointed out, the advice to minimize field stripping only applies to bedded rifles. You can field strip your Scout as much as you want.

If it's new the action will be properly greased from the factory but there's no shipping oil to wipe off. I think it's always a good idea to field strip before shooting the first time just to gain familiarity and look for spots that might need lubrication. But otherwise just go shoot it.

Thanks for the all the replies. I was all ready to go shoot with my ex-scout sniper buddy today but someone shot themselves in the head at our local indoor range GI3

I hope they come through it okay, but I haven't head anything.

No I'm really not trying to be funny, I was trying to indicate a somber face with GI3 . Someone really shot themselves and the range has been closed all afternoon. The local radio station reported that a lady was wounded in the head. I've been looking for a news story but can't find one. Hope it turns out to be false.

Quick question for anyone that reads this:

I am looking to get a bore guide, this one in particular:

http://www.brownells.com/aspx/NS/store/ProductDetail.aspx?p=81&title=M14/M1A BORE GUIDE&s=462#462

Will this work with the Scout's Muzzle Break? The scout muzzle break looks to be about 5/8" in diameter.

Took it to the range today for the first time. This scout is a joy to shoot. It got a lot of attention at the range too. It was shooting about 10" low at 100 yards from the factory. I'm still working on getting that zero, but my 100 yard groups were about 5" from a bench rest w/ the irons. I have no experience so I'm pretty happy with that, and am looking forward to improving.

I will say that Winchester Supreme CXP2 .308 ammo smells like something that should splash down in porcelain.
