What ships you served aboard?

I thought this could be fun, and another way to connect over time and distance-

What ships have you folks served aboard?

I went on float on the USS Raleigh, LPD-1, for Contingency Marine Air-Ground Task Force 4-88. Mission was escorting reflagged oil tankers in the Persian Gulf, although peace broke out before we got there...MCORPS1 I had the honor of being the team leader for the Mk 38 25mm chain guns in the ship's self-defense loop. The guns had just been added to the deck, they hadn't even slathered nonskid on the weldments yet.

Later I floated aboard the USS Belleau Wood, LHA-3, with the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable) AKA MEU(SOC). After Desert Shield/Storm, I thought it was the hot ticket for action... then while we were bobbing around in the Pacific, all of my friends went to Somalia. D'OH MCORPS1

I was on the USS Tripoli (LPH-10) in '88 for Operation Kernel Blitz. I heard she was damaged by a mine in the persian gulf in '90 and decomissioned in '95.

Lets see: USS Little Rock CLG6. USS Orleck DD886, USS Mason DD852, USS Forrestal CV59, USS Enterprise CVAN65, the USS Long Beach CGN9, and the USS Edson, DD 946. Also the USS Firedrake AE-14.

We transited and/or operated off of these vessels, particularly the tin cans.DI5

It was. We went out for Operation Eager Mace in 94, she still had a list to one side.
Wow, ... that must have been a heck of a mine.

One of the guys in my platoon that was with us on the Tripoli, ... his father served on the Tripoli (Navy) during Vietnam. I always thought that was cool.

Re: Ships

Served from 1967-71 as an aviation fire control technician (AQ2) first in VA-42 at Oceana, VA and later assigned to VA-34 and deployed on the USS JFK ( CV-67). I worked on the APQ/92 search / terrain clearance radar suite of the Grumman A6 Intruder. I never had a job that gave me so much satisfaction or responsibility. NAV1
