So long ago can't remember if i was trained with an M1 or M14?? I remember I could strip it and put it back together blindfolded, pronto. Today, well, can barely pull the trigger housing out on my M14. Curious if any out there were at Fort Ord (on the bay near S.F Ca.) back in the day and what rifle we trained with.
Nope, did not use a rifle after that but did a typewriter....... thank you. cadiz

Not Ft. Ord, but at Ft. Dix it was the M14 during Basic training in the summer of 1964.
My guess would be M1. I lived in Marina (the town next door) and we kids would regularly go on scavenger hunts into the Fort Ord training areas. We found thousands of M1 clips. Of course, those could have been left over from WWII training, for all we knew. We did find piles of 7.62X51 blank brass where someone had set up a machine gun. I know that at some point they switched over to a select fire rifle because we could hear them on the various ranges by the beach. I eventually collected all the parts to make a complete practice grenade--the Holy Grail of scavenger kids.

Ft ORD May 61 - M-1 -- Germany 61-62 Carbine-- late 62 M-14
Fort Ord in the mid '60's? M14's for sure, as all M16 production was delivered to Vietnam units, SF and airborne formations, and then ARVN military, in that order. Sufficient M16's were not available for general Army issue until 1970-71, AT LEAST.
Ft Ord Oct-Dec 67 Infantry AIT. We had M14s but was introduced and qualified with the M16.
My uncle was at Ord in 61 or 62 for basic and had the M1. He told me one time they were given training on the M14 and a full magazine to fire.
