FS, {Flash Suppressor, that object on the end of the M1A barrel.
The FS , as recalled , original purpose was to assist in preventing barrel climb during Automatic fire.. It helped, of course, only a very few people were issued M14's that had auto selectors. It also had a provision to attach the Bayonet. The really important FS feature was and is a very good place to attach the FS [Front Sight]..
It was the aggressive use of the Bayonet, along with dropping the rifle, that caused endless problems. Like many efforts to solve ongoing problems new ideas resulted, the FS trouble is no exception. I've related this before, but we have new members that may have missed out on an important development of the FS... Reaming the Flash Suppressor..
