Gentleman, need a little help with this scope. I was at the range today and got my Ga Precision M40A1 shooting pretty good at 300 yrds. Shot a 10 shot group and now I need to move the point of impact lets say 1 MOA down and 1 MOA right at 300 hundred to center the group up.
It's my understanding that the original plates had a 1 MOA lines cut into it. Each line was 1 MOA. Well I moved the top elevation allen adjustment first and without the lines, I guessed wrong and went way to far and my shot placement was way low.. Readjusted the allen and shot again better. I guess my question is this. Does anyone have an idea of how much the graduation marks on the plates relate to movement like 1/8 to a 1/4 movement. In my work today I say that 1/8 to 1/4 is way to much movement in finale shot placement.
On another note I was very please at my CMP Unertl scope. It seemed to tack and move as needed. The M40A1 by Ga was spot on. My hand loads shot better than the LC 118 LR that I had on hand. When I get this scope right I'll post picture for all to see.

Here is an image from the Unertl manual that shows the index marks. Each index mark is about 1 MOA. There are 20 index marks in the 180 degree tool, so for example, turning 90 degrees would move about 10 MOA.

I have a higher resolution copy of the manual that I could email if you want a copy.

Cass, thanks for the info. I have the manual and just went too far in my initial adjustment. If I can find the degree of the lines I can make my own. After looking further at the pic in the manual its just plain dumb the adjustment I made LOL. I hate to admit it but the price of reloading components and ammo for this adventure can hit the pocket... Oh well..

360 degrees (in a circle) / 40 index marks total (for 360 degree tool) = 9 degrees per mark

(y)

Maybe that screw is 40 threads per inch? The math seems to suggest that. Seeing as one mark is "about 1 MOA", and that means 40 marks is about 40 MOA. One MOA is "about" 1" at 100 yards; close, but not exactly an inch.

I want to provide and update to my M40A1 Unterl 10x USMC weapons platform. Many of you here have the gift of writing a very good report with very technical information on your write ups, I'm not one of those guys, so work with me, LOL.
During my very short time in the Corps in the early seventies the M40A1 platform was in its hey day and I told myself I would have one. Well life family, career got in the way.
For my retirement I told myself that I would gift myself one. Over the years I've done the research on it and decided on having one built by GA Precision. My hats off to a lot of the members here that do the research to find all original parts and have them built into a great gun to carry on the tradition. I chose my route due to my age and the fact that I wanted to shoot it while I still could, LOL.. I started out with looking for the scope first. I had a T10 Weaver on hand but really wanted the USMC 10X Unertl. As luck would have it I got my hands on one, with the USO upgrade. I wanted that upgrade. GA Precision was great to work with and made little changes to the gun that I requested.

I would also say that their are many folks here that have provided insight on this adventure, but I have to give a shout out to Random Guy for his help. He was good enough to send me his on tools and a copy of the manual to get my scope shooting. Also a shout out to HutchS and Cass... I have to give cridet to my engineer friend who helped with ballistic charts.. Now on to the workings.

I need to see if the scope would track like it should so I did graph set on the ballistics for the 175 SMK loaded with IMR 4064 at 2600 fps. Now I know thats a little off of Federal Gold match but it give me what I was looking for. From the picture of the graph the shot placement was pretty much on target . This was shot at 50 YRDS so the paralax made my sight target an little blury to say the least.. The only question I have is, you can see as I shot up the range and the shot impact started to move more to the left as it moved to 1000 yards. I'm hoping that this is from the lower FPS on the load and not a problem on the scope tracking. So far so good. And think that once I find the guns NODE for loads it will only get better. Another quick question for you shooters on this platform. Do you load your hand loads to fit the magazine of do you chose to single feed your ammo with longer lengths? The last target you see is at 300 yards with a gusty 15 to 20 mile wind thats why only 3 shots, I also used a SR-C 200 yard target instead of the normal SR3 300 yard target, trying to get ready for the Vintage Match at Quantico this spring. Thanks for taking a look.

The scope may be canted slightly to the left. Verify that the scope is plumb as compared to the receiver.

Glad that project is coming together. Looks great. It’s hard to know if the tracking is precise without a lot of “4-corner box” testing of four quadrants on a target where the repeatability of the adjustments is really tested.

Hope to see you at Quantico in April, probably use my M1903 on Saturday and my M40A1 or A5 on Sunday. Don’t be surprised if you run out of elevation with Fed 175 GMM at 1000 yds, and have to use a reticle-based slight hold-over at that distance.

Mid-April they are having a vintage precision rifle match on Range 4, and typically hold same event in September

Getting on base is a bit more challenging now as a guest, but here's s link re a 2021 QSC event:

Check out the calendar at the website:

The match is listed as well as tons of other stuff about the club. I was pretty unaware of the club when I was at TBS. I found the club years later from a table they had set up at a gun show.

Dito! Getting on base won’t be an issue, on the calendar!

It could be the scope/rifle was slightly canted to the left as RAMMAC suggested. Another possibility is parallax error is more apparent at short distances. Especially since you were at 50yds with a 300yd parallax setting. Any slight change in cheekweld could make that 1/2" shift.

RAMAC and Smoothy8500, you guys nailed it.. When I got the gun level the scope was canted to the left just a little. Tks... Random have you or any of you guys shimed the front of the scope to get the level needed for 1000 yrds. In the past I've used some .010 brass shim cut to fit and that works good. Just don't know with the Redfield mounts on this unertl...

I did use a shim on my m40 replica, which ran out of adjustment beyond 800 yards. I didn’t shim the M40A1 mount, I just use the Mil-Dot reticle for the holdover at 1000 yds. I have since Cerakoted it black, but here’s the aluminum shim on my M40 replica with zero cant BO repo M40 mount.

Random, I was looking at that set up to shim the mount, but I think I'll try placing the shim under the rear mount bottom scope ring, not the complete mount. If my friends engineering calculations are correct one .010 shims under the scope should give us 4 MOA of elevation. We shall see. We have a local match this weekend that I'm planning on shooting and after that I'll do some testing with the M40A1 as long as the rain holds off.

AMS 41,
You need to shim the scope base as shimming the ring will tend to bend the scope tube at the front ring. I know these Unertl's are strong scopes but I would try to avoid any undue strain on the scope body.

Range report for the M40A1..
I had the opportunity to get to the range yesterday and really work my loads and get the scope zeroed properly at 300 yds, I also took my M21 clone. Later this month I'm heading to Camp Butner where they are having two days of 600 yard shooting. This will allow me to get true dope on both rifles..
It was sunny and 68 degrees and a slight L to R half value wind. The mirage was hard to figure out but we managed. Any time at the range is a good time.. The M40A1 is ready for the six hundred yds next week, the M21 with the Leatherwood Camputer scope still has some issues. I can't get they front mount locking screw to stay tight. After several shots it will work loose. I know its not the best scope out there but its one I have that I can use at the Vintage Sniper Matches held at Quantico Marine base.. I'll post some pictures of its target when I get it to sit still LOL..

Carry On !!
