Bill: The m14 that I had in the service had a 7 didget serial no.(#1447345). My SA M1A has 6. Did all USGI M14s have a 7 didget number?

Here are 7 digit serial numbers reported to me by various board members.

  • SA
    1,591,777
    H&R
    1444915
    1522293
    WRA
    1066052 demil
    1082610
    1167604
    1183057
    1211185
    1216435 demil
    1157650
    1179799
    TRW
    1181446
    1355709 demil
    1385346 demil
    1383997 demil
    1391477 demil
    1393136 MKS
    1434500
    1455512

With SA making so few rifles I would guess they didn't produce too many high serial numbered rifles.

Serial numbers and date of production??

Is there a list available that shows when each group of serial numbers were manufactured, such as we have for the Garands? I'd be curious to see when the two HRA's I supplied you the numbers for were made.

Thank you......

FWIW, there is such a list. It is on page 337 of the book U.S. Rifle M14 from John Garand to the M21 by R. Blake Stevens. This list was prepared in 1965 by Mr. Albert A. Cole, Jr. who worked at Rock Island Arsenal at the time.

I appreciate the above links but that website, for M14 use, unfortunately is not reliable. I have known about the problem for a long time. If you enter a serial number like 845192 in Winchester's search, it comes up the rifle was produced in 1962-63. The only problem is that serial number is an H&R. It should exclude that serial number, but as many different contracts were running at the same time, it OKs anything searched between the very first rifle and the very last rifle of that contractor, even other contractors' serial numbers that fall between those two.
The search can determine only the approx time period. The results are not programed as to which manufacture the serial number applies to.

Bill,

Are you collecting M14 Serial #'s that are demilled? I have some demilled receivers that I can give you the serial #'s for and the manufacturer. It's only a drop in the bucket in the big picture, but if you want it, I'll email it to you.
