Inspired by Arcticdog I converted my M1 receiver to accept standard M14 parts as well as custom made parts here is what I have.
M1 receiver ,front legs removed and mag opening milled to M14 specs.
M1 operating rod handle welded to an M14 tube
Fabricated block for the spring guide and forward mag stop
NM type spring guide custom made from solid heat treated steel.
M1 bolt assembly
Modified walnut stock
M14 trigger group with M1 trigger guard
All standard M14 TRW barrel and gas system
All GI parts

I might add that the receiver used in this was one that had one of its rear legs broke off,and I had welded it back on and it fired over 1200 rounds as an M1 belonging to a friend .I purchased it from him for this build .So no collector value has been lost.

Iron Worker's rifle got done ahead of mine, so I'm envious! Of course, the work is superb, the rifle functions well, and I'm interested in lots of construction details.

Iron Worker's shown me a modified approach to what my gunsmith originally built. My ideas came from two Forum members - HuntingHawk and Tommo - who PM'd me with information and photos last year. The gunsmith then built a working rifle (we call it a prototype), which he displays at gunshows. It always turns a few heads since they recognize it, but... its unique.

I appreciate the comments ,theres a few different types of this conversion I've seen ,Articdog and I had talked about one recently he and his gunsmith had put together.I've seen the one on Differents web sight that Elmer built and all three are very similier.
Basically the M1 and M14 receivers are nearly identical except the M1 is 3/8'' longer .They can use the same trigger groups minus the guards, barrels, and share similier headspace diminsions.
This configuration uses a standard H&R M14 trigger group with an M1 guard as I used the rear M1 legs for trigger group mounting.
So the mag catch is still the same as on all M14 housings.
I shot 60 rounds through it at variuos speeds and mag capacities and it functioned perfect.If you look at the mag shot you'll see the block that fills the gap in receiver lengths .
The extra length actually allows less of an angle to the rounds so feeding was smooth and never even contacted the filler although I did radius the front edge just in case.
The gas system is a standard GI forged unit with a new standard piston and editional length was added to the front band so it would contact the stock ferul.
The op rod is an H&R demill tube half way down the thin side its welded to a demill NM SA m1 garand handle section.
This is needed in my opinion so the bolt will cam into full lock position.
You also have to use the M1 handle length which is about .030'' shorter than the M14.
I was going to cut the rear legs and machine the M14 trigger guard slots but decided not to at this time.
There is no bolt stop at least not yet last round stops on the follower like many other auto loaders.
Full mags loaded easily.
Spring guide is basically the same only a longer flat area and the slot is located different and uses the follower rod pin from the M1 design.
Quite a few mods to the stock,two piece stock liner front half is glued in and rear bolts like usual several clearance cuts for rear bolt travel and op rod forward movement and you have to have a stock with long back porch so the heel doesn't hang over.
This is an H&R .

Very cool. Curious, what happens after firing the last round and then removing the mag? Does the bolt go into battery? Maybe this is a dumb question.

After the last round is fired you grab the op rod with the right hand press down on the follower and close the bolt.Full mags can be loaded with the bolt closed.
Exaclty like a Remington 742 or similer.
A bolt stop would be nice but I've not decided on that yet.

***Update*** , a modified BM59 bolt stop is installed and working.
