My family has been in California since 1848 and I live in a town about 45minutes north of your daughter. It has changed from farming to Fast Track & Driven life style. I was in 5 different cities worked a couple hours in one plus made a dozen phones just to keep the wolf at bay by 230. Welcome to the California Life where people are coming and going It’s a Mad Mad World

strange. . I could only list a handful of 'no-go' zones for women in CA, and almost every one of them would be at night as well. I pwouldnt classify 29palms as 'unsafe' either unless there's been a drastic uptick in crime.

They wouldn't be telling female service members that if there wasn't a good reason. Things are not always as they seem.

Wow...my grand-daughter just flew back to base [Cali] after being on leave for a wedding just over a week ago....she's a marine also.

Hey, the males should also travel in pairs or more too. Still it is sad though that any women are preyed upon. California is no help for self defense and you know the Marines don't provide any authority to let the troops carry weapons off base either so it's like anywhere else YOYO, unless you can travel in numbers as a deterrent. And this is good advice for any young people out there.

Just in case she's stubborn, she should heed the warnings. If she thinks it's sexist BS to be told to go about with a male escort, then she should at least move around with a female friend or two. When the installation command advises troops to not move around by themselves, it's advice that should be taken to heart.

NCIS ain't even close to what they show on TV, but they do a pretty good job on matters relating to close-in base defense and criminal threats directed to service members and other resources (i.e. doing their actual job - not the BS shown on TV).

The base MPs and Shore Patrol also likely have very good liaison with LEA's around the base, and finally, no installation commander is going to allow un-vetted warnings like this to go out willy-nilly to all the personnel on the base (to include civilian dependents of service members living on and off base). There's too much potential political backlash coming his / her way for doing anything to restrict or limit off-base troop activities without damned good reason.

"White slavery" and kidnappings to supply the sex trade are no sh*t for real problems in a lot of places that the average American is ignorant of. As a parent and grandparent of a daughter and granddaughter, I'd never advocate or support either of them traveling alone to or around any place in the Caribbean, Mexico, Central or South America or a lot of other places, to include just about every large city in the US.

Use to live in California when it was a State in early 60's. Moved back to Texas. Things aren't safe for women or men anywhere, crooks abound. My wife and I both carry .45's. Sorry to know young heros can't leave the base without an escort and can't be armed. The enemy use to be in some hole across the pond. Now the Commies in power have empowered crooks to take no quarter. Now the enemy is within our borders.
