The Citadel, Charleston, SC
Just got back from charleston, SC and passed through the Citadel College.
In the court yard of one of their Military dormatories (a huge drill ground) were some 25 or more students marching back and forth across the yard with M14's (This was their punishment for some minor violations) and would spend the whole afternoon doing this.
I managed to get the attention of at least two students to take a close look at their rifles, while they were still holding them. Both has Winchester Receivers and barrels, one of them a TRW bolt. The selector had been capped with the semi-auto lock. One explained the rifle was rendered inoperable by the removal of the firing pin and spring, but visual examination of the bore appeared fine and not welded up - nice crome inside, and park outside. Stocks were USGI and original finish, not beaten up. Op rod pulled back and snapped that distinct forged ring.
No, I do not have pictures to post, but thought the explanation would suffice. Yes, there are armories out there with them in safe keeping.

Sounds like an interesting trip to the Citadel. Glad to hear they are sticking with the 14 for drill and parade purposes at least.

Any other Citadel grads out there? I'm 1968. Go Bulldogs! We had a lot of guys go to 'nam - Army, Navy, Marines, and AIR FORCE. Some never made it home.
Please stop flaming things in posts. Most of us know what the highest law in the land states: ".....shall not be infringed"..... unlike some.
This gives the opposition lots of leads. According to recent scandals and shameful public statements, it looks like "opposers" are looking for any tipping point reason to strip the US private citizens completely of all rights and ownership.

It's interesting that thousands of CMP owned M14 rifles were issued to State R&P Associations for marksmanship training and subsecantly issued to association members. These were used for many years with no legal hasels even though they were classified as Class III weapons. It's sad that they have all been turned back in. AFAIK they were not returned to military use, but remain in the hands of the CMP who is in a quandry over what to do with them. They considered rebuilding them with commercial receivers, but couldn't deside who's receivers to use and they didn't want to show favoritism. I'd suggest they appeal to BATF and DOJ to have them declaired legal to issue to civilians. After all, they have been rendered semi auto only and the CMP could make a fortune selling them off. The regulation of once a MG, always a MG is stupid. These are not the kind of weapons used in crimes.
I was very impressed with the campus, especially those castle like dorms. One had the big red and white alternating squares. I went to the Museum and did go through some photo albums of graduates that died in WW2, Korea, Nam, etc. Some looked like movie stars in their photographs, very cavalier and dapper. By the way, we refer to West Point as the VMI of the north and we don't refer to that prep school in Charleston at all.

All the while you forget about little old North Georgia College and State University. The place young men go when West Point is too weak. Seriously though West Point is the only place that commissions more Active Duty officers than them. They apparently have quite the arms room too. Lots and lots of M14's amongst other things I hear.

Our M-14's were fully functional otherwise (except missing the firing pins). I remember walking over to Jenkins Hall (ROTC building and armory) and having "Shorty" install firing pins into our M-14's prior to FTX's (Ft Bragg, Francis Marion Forest, Camp LeJeune, etc). They were used primarily for OpFOR and we ran blanks through them but at the end of an exercise, they were spotless and ready for a TAC inspection.
You could barely understand SSgt "Shorty" Robinson but he was a facinating man who saw a bunch of us come through the armory doors over the years. One time he let me peek deep into the armory and I recall crates of M-14 mags and parts. No telling what happened to all of that.
It's been 20 years but I seem to think I carried a "SPRINGFIELD ARMORY" rifle. I wish I could remember the serial number but we were issued new rifles every year and I just didn't recall it.
Those were some fantastic times.

When stationed on a sub in Charleston I remember seein Citadel students going through the Navy Hospital. Basically they are another Military academy and have the same rights and privledges as West Point, Annapolis and the AF Academy.
