Barrel question regarding my late '80s SuperMatch. SAI has verified that the serial number identifies it as a Glen-Nelson built rifle. I know they were using Douglas or Kreiger tubes back then.

On the top of the barrel near the front sight on mine, it's stamped SM. Does anyone know if that stamp signifies which make of barrel it is?

Thanks.

I believe it signifies supermatch. My Glen Nelson has no markings on it whatsoever. It is a Douglas barrel, I do know that.
Yes, I know it means SuperMatch. Even the gal @ SAI who ran the serial number knew that.

Question is, does that stamp signify that it's a Douglas, a Kreiger, or some other make of tube?

Did the barrel-maker stamp it 'SM', or was it stamped later on by Glen Nelson's folks prior to installing it in the receiver?

I think the SM choices in the '80s were Douglass and Hart, the latter being stainless. Krieger is a more recent offering. I'll see if I can dig up some old literature.
I'm going by memory on my phone call to vet this rifle, but now I think you're right. My receiver serial # dates to 1986.

When I called, the SAI gal took the serial number and the other info about the TRW bolt, USGI parts, and the 'SM' barrel stamp, and said "back then" the barrel was either "Douglas or Hart." I got Kreiger mixed up with Hart.

I'd still like to know who stamped the top of the barrel with 'SM.' The maker or GN's peeps?

Frank a pic of the machining would help, a Douglas tube will have a slightly rounded step down just forward of the chamber a Krieger will be straight with no rounded step down clear too the op-rod guide.

Getting back a bit late, ... I'm bumping this thread to supply a pic of the top of the barrel back a bit from the front sight:

Stamped S.M.

Took a look at that area of the barrel, and there's a rounded step-down ahead of the chamber.
