I recently received my stamp for an SBR lower and I moved my 300 BLK upper, that was on a pistol lower to the SBR lower. Hmmm, now what to do with the pistol lower??? I decided to try my hand at putting a 10.5" 5.56 barreled upper together from parts. I have the following parts on order:

- Aero Precision AR15 M4E1 Enhanced Upper
- Aero Precision 9" Enhanced M-LOK Gen2 Handguard
- KAK Value-Line 5.56 10.5" Carbine melonited barrel
- KAK Flash Can

I could put a normal gas system in it or give a piston system a try. I have not used a piston system in an AR before and I think this would be a good time to play with it. I'm seriously considering a Superlative Arms Piston kit as they are small, lightweight, and I like how they get rid of the extra gas.

Looks like an improved version of the Adams Arms kit. Adams Arms uses a bigger gas block with a rail on top which limits the handguards you can use. The Superlative Arms block looks like it will fit under most handguards.

Yes, it is much smaller which does give you many more options as far as hanguards go. I've read reviews, which were all good, but have not run into any end users as of yet.

The superlative arms piston kit is the best thing you can add to an AR platform, especially if running suppressed. It will get rid of nearly all blowback an is much much cleaner. I have 2 of these kits, one on my carbine and one on my target rifle. I will not build another AR without one.

Unfortunately they will not work on a 300 blackout yet. I called superlative arms and spoke with a guy named Tony, he said that he is coming out with a light weight kit for the blackout sometime spring of 2017. I also have a SBR blackout that I shoot suppressed, I tried everything I knew to try and could not get the thing to function reliably. The way these kits work I will definitely buy one for my blackout when they are available.

Y'all are correct on the handguards, as long as your handguard has a top rail ridge it will fit. I run the stinger supremacy handguards, they are a smaller diameter(small enough my 1 1/2 suppressor will not fit inside) but has a top rail and both of my clear.

If you are thinking about getting one of these kits, don't hesitate, they work really well. But hold off if you are going to try it on a 300 blackout, wait till the dedicated kit is available.

Tribble36, thanks for the information, I had about given up thinking anyone here had ever run one. I have already bought one, but have not yet put that upper together. Sounds like it should work very well in my application.

I have a SA piston kit on both a 16" middy and a 18" rifle.

The 16" ran fine but I had some short stroking with the 18" with the highest setting. It would eject but sometimes wouldn't pick up the next round. I ended up opening up the gas port about .006" and haven't test fired it yet.

I did some reading and apparently a 18" with a rifle length has an occasional problem with being undergassed

Accuracy was very good though at 3/4 moa and I like the fact that I can run free float handguards.

My advise is to get the set screw version and not the clamp version. The clamp version is slightly larger profile that has trouble working with the really small diameter handguards.
