I finally purchased my first Springfield M1A. It will be my casual target shooting and hunting rifle. I have already ordered Checkmate magazines, thanks to the advice in this forum and al the useful help.

I need help with compiling a list of basic spare parts, accesories and tools to keep on hand to do routine maintainance, cleaning and replacing worn out parts(parts that tend to malfunction or break). Also need help choosing a good sling. Also what are the best brands to purchase and ones to avoid.

Many Thanks in advance.

A complete spare bolt headspaced to the rifle is more handy then a bunch of parts. If there is a problem then just drop in the other bolt and fix the one with the problem later. In a serious situation you can change out a bolt faster then trying to repair a broken part.

USGI combination tool (not a Chinese copy)

USGI cleaning kit

Boresnake

CLP and Lubriplate

Broken shell extractor

That's really all you need to get started. There are lots of neat tools to help you along later. Many made by Sadlak.

I lost all of my rifles & handguns in a mishap on Rio Grande when the barge hit a sandbar and sank.
