Hello all, I am new to the M1A platform and have a question about a cycling issue. I recently purchased a Socom 16 and am having the worst time trying to get the rifle to cycle properly. I have taken the gas cylinder out and inspected it for carbon build up. After a thorough inspection ot appears to be very clean inside and out. I also inspected the guide rod and it appears to be in good condition and clean as well. I'm using surplus m80 ball ammo and it refuses to cycle. I have to manually charge each round. Could it be the magazine I'm using? Any info would be helpful. Thanks in advance!

If it fails to cycle on every round. Does it cycle smoothly manually? Then
I would look to see if the gas valve is actually turned on.
If it’s turned on, then do the holes line up properly between the gas cylinder and barrel. Check it with a small Allen wrench inserted into the hole to see if it shows in the barrel.

Sounds like the gas system is turned off, or the holes aren’t lined up.
Also, ensure your chamber is scrubbed clean if this is a brand new rifle from SA.

The holes in the gas cylinder and barrel are lined up, gas is turned on, barrel and cylinder are clean. I took it apart when I got home from work today and it appears that the charging handle inner (where it slops down into opt rod) is hitting the edge of the barrel contour when 90% pulled to the rear. I'm guessing thats not normal.

Rubbing there is fine. If it is binding, that's different.

What exactly is happening when you fire a round? Does the fired case extract and eject?

What stock is on the rifle?

What ammo are you using?
When ever I fire one round, the bolt fails to eject spent cartridge. Its almost as if the the bolt isn't coming all the way back to the rear. The stock is a Sage international EBR chassis. The ammunition is military surplus M80 ball.

OK. When I bought my Socom16, I had an issue where the oprod was catching on the optic rail base. Your problem sounded familiar.
