I was shootin' the breeze last evening with our very own wdigeorge and he was packin' up again ...

I thought maybe he was going on another one of his foreign goodwill trips but come to find out he was headed out this mornin' for a two day sniper class .... 8O

Sounds interesting and he said if possible he will post some pics for us when he gets back ...

That is if they allow pics to be taken anyway ...

Hey SixT!

I just got back from my first day of sniper class..oh wait...I mean "Precision Rifle class" to be politically correct here in CA. LOL

It was a tiring day. Out there in the desert from 8am to about 5pm in the 90deg sun. We were shooting from a braced sitting position & prone position at man size targets from 100yds out to 500yds.

I am waiting for my buddy to email me the pictures so I can post them on here...which should be any mintue now.

Anybody noticed the shot up Patrol Car? LOL It wasn't suppose to be shot at but somebody put a few rounds through it before we showed up for class. The instructor painted "NO SHOOT" on the car but I don't think it works very well....it's more like a magnet to attract bullets.

This is our ITTS Class Instructor. He teaches LAPD Swat, metro, FBI, special forces, etc. Good guy and very knowledgible. Now, that's what I call a SPOTTING SCOPE!! 8O :lol:

I took a carbine class from Scott when he was up in the bay area last spring. Lot of fun, lot of work, good training and I laughed a lot...

Was thinking about taking the precision rifle class in January. Went to an LE only sniper class by HSS a few years ago, was a waste of money and good ammo. Think ITTS should be much better.

Please let us know your review of the class. A few of us from our department are thinking about making a road trip out of it.

If you taken a class from Scott before then you know what I am talking about. He's a really good teacher and he makes the class fun.

I learned so much from his classes and every time I come back from one of his classes I have a different prespective on firearms and the equipement that I use. You learn very quickely with Scott what works and what doesn't.

I just came back from DAY 2 of my sniper class and today it was a bit more challenging. We were shooting moving targets in open sight and then hidden hostage/friendly targets that move out from behind obstacles. You'd be lucky to get a 5 shot group within 12" at 75yds.

We also did drills today shooting from various "real world" positions such as on top of roofs, side of a hill, etc. The last leg of the class was a hunt for 9 hidden targets varying from 200yds out to 600yds in camo. You have to go out in pairs (sniper teams) with one spotter and one shooter.

We found and hit 7 targets out of 9 within the specified time frame. It really shows how important a good spotting scope/binoc's are. Most of us have cheap spotting scopes that can't pick out the camo'ed targets at a distance. Oh well, live and learn. At least our Leupold rifle scopes were up to the test.

Some basic things I picked up in summary equipment wise:

1. Buy Good Scopes - Stick to Leupold Fixed 10X, 1/4 MOA adjustment

2. Use One Piece Bridge Mount for the Rifle (Remy 700)

3. Use Good Scope Rings...Double Ring your scope...or Badger MAX50's Scott (instructor) seems to like my setup alot. Do not use quick detach rings.

4. No Bipods - Use a good "pack" instead filled with hard and soft objects that you can "mold" to fit your needs.

5. Simple, clean stock with nothing that can get "caught". He likes the McMillian A1 style.

6. Forget about adjustable stocks, cheek rests, etc. Once it is set, it shouldn't be adjusted.

7. Good Spotting Scope & Binocs - He recommended Leica....pricey, but you'll never need to buy another pair.

8. Use Sunshades for your Scope

9. Don't use those hex/honeycomb anti-reflection filters. Cuts way too much light.

10. Only use one type of ammo in your rifle, no reloads. One good choice is Federal Gold Match 308.

wd great pictures. You mentioned the Rem 700 is that what you were shooting. Did you shoot any thing else besides a 308. The bottom picture in your first set of pictures. Is that a telescope being used as a spotting scope. reason I asked I could use somthing like that at my range where can I get somthing like that?

All I had was the 308 for the class and I think out of the 11 people there, we all had a 308 caliber rifle. I guess that's the caliber of choice

As for the "Telescope" err...I mean "Spotting Scope" It is suppose to be a spotting scope though my first impression of it was exactly....what the heck is he doing with a Telescope?? LOL

I am not sure what kind it is but knowing Scott, it's probably a Leica, which he recommends. He used 2 different spotting scopes for the class, I know the smaller one is Leica, but I never peeked under that towel to check what brand that monster scope is.

I think you can get it at riflescopes.com but they are pricey!

Thanks wd. i need somthing that can reach 800-1000 meters so I dont have to go all the way down range to see the impacts. any thing that will range that far will be spendy would any of the smaller scopes you used, work for me at that long range?

I am not sure if any of the sub $300 spotting scopes we had at the class will let you see out to 800-1000 meters clearly. I think when you go that far, you'd be looking at a minium $500+ scopes.

From the various recommendations that I have gotten, it seems like it would be either a Leupold or a Leica spotting scope. I personally do not have any experiences w/ these high end spotting scopes though.
