I am interested in shooting some Service Rifle matches. Slow fire events require loading one round at a time. What is the proper procedure for single loading a M14?

The way I have done it in a match, is to load a mag in the rifle, then feed one round through the opening down into your mag. Then let her ride home, pointing down range in case of slam fire, which is supposed to be virtually impossible with the M1A.

The bolt will lock back every time, because there isn't another round in the mag. Repeat.

With empty mag in rifle, push a single round down into the mag.
When ready to chamber the round, pull back slightly on the oprod & then release the oprod.

keep the muzzle downrange (and not too elevated) when chambering,
and don't rest the muzzle on your foot (when standing).

Dittos. Insert round in mag, pull back op rod handle and release. Don't ride the op rod - just let it fly home picking the round up out of the mag.
