I am looking for a sturdy scope mount for a Tula SKS. I know there are mounts on top of the cover but that strikes me as being prone to movement. I have seen an after-market mount on the gas tube - does anyone use that? Does anyone know of a mount that will be secure enough to hold a zero through sustained firing?

What kind of scope are you looking to use? Do you use stripper clips or the Tapco mags? I've spent a ton of time researching SKS moints, and bought several.. Bottom Line don't use the receiver cover ones, they move, don't use the gas tube ones they move and can be canted as well.

There are a couple good ones:

I would recommend the SKS Kwik Rail for general use if you don't need stripper clips, It's well made:

Zero could theoretically move a bit when you pivot it up during cleaning, but my brother uses it on a SKS-M (mag fed) I gave him, with an eotech for hunting, it hasn't caused him a problem, but you can't use stripper clips. If you use it with the tapco mags it doesn't matter as much, or want it for hunting where it's not a big deal if you load the mag by hand.

If you want a scout scope or red dot. There are several that attach to the solid front sight pocket. Here is one, there are others, some with longer rails. This is a sturdy setup.

If you want to use a standard scope type setup, I recommend this one from Murray's.

But it requires drilling and tapping..

Get the mag wedge, i have one similar on mine. the front goes right in to the orignal rear site. I have dropped my gun slipping on ice, and it did not budge at all scope held zero (as best as an sks shooting surplus can be zeroed lol).

here is a link to the one i have, just not sure if it is avaliable in the USA

None. Just get glasses and learn to use the iron sights. Don't bubba up a tula SKS.

I bought a spare dust cover for mine and found it was so tight on that rifle I had difficulty putting it on (perfect). I took it to a gunsmith and had him screw on a scope base I found at a gun show that mated perfectly with the curve on the top of the dustcover. It has held zero being taken on and off multiple times for cleaning and shoots well like that. For my brother who wanted to do the same thing I used a MIG and tacked the mating surfaces on the front of another spare cover and had him file to fit. He's now got a scope on his rifle that holds up like mine.
