Had a great day today, I got to go shooting with my cousin today; He has just enlisted in the Air National Guard to be an SP. He had asked to go to see what the arf and Beretta are like as those are the two types of weapons he’ll probably be using. We also happened to take a few other toys along.

We started on the short (pistol caliber only) range with a little Ruger 22/45, Beretta 92FS, 9mm Colt arf, and Vector Uzi. We spent a few hours out there getting familiar with the weapons and shooting at IPSC cardboard targets.

After the short range we moved to the regular rifle range to see what a little distance is like. On the rifle range we got to shoot the Norinco AK, M1A, short FAL, and a suppressed arf. We had a good time and I think the future SP is really picking it up. I hope we’ll get to go a few more times before he gets shipped off to Texas for basic.

Best regards, T

Aloha T:

Cool range report! So, your cousin got to really shoot, huh? Looks like a great assortment of firearms, enough to keep a few people busy!!!

I like the variety you brought out to play with!!! I'll bet there was even more that you didn't take pics of... but I bet you cousin had his fill on shooting for one day!!! I am sure your AR gave him a pretty good idea of what he can expect to shoot in the military!

I agree with Six, that is an awesome range, looks like you could put the entire state of Hawaii downrange... nice setup there!!!

Aloha and tell you cousin we wish him well!!!

The range is really cool; it’s the Albany Rifle and Pistol Club.

I completely forgot we even had the camera when we were on the short range, so no pics from there. I guess we’ll have to go back and re-shoot…

The M1A started life as the stripped down model. It was sent back to SA for excessive headspace and was given a new heavy match barrel. Ron Smith did the rest of the work. Unitized gas system, NM trigger, cleaned it all up so it’s real smooth. The rifle has a smith scope base and rings to hold the Leupold VariX III M1. Ron also glass bedded a nice walnut stock that I have since broke, so this is it’s first time out in the GI fiberglass stock. It was shooting just as good as it ever has; five round groups with GMM at 100 yards you could almost cover with a nickel, just one ragged hole.

The FAL is a registered SBR on a DSA receiver. The thing loves the Australian surplus. 7.62 in an 11-inch barrel will just about suck the fillings right out of your teeth…

The arf is also a registered SBR, it is a preban Colt with a Gemtech M4-96C. Having the can on the weapon really magnifies the problems of the arf pooping where it eats. The only other addition is a Trijicon front sight.

Sounds like we’re going to have to get back out there for some more pics. Check out the link to the range in the mean time though.

Bet regards, T
