I just picked up a SOCOM II with extended rail. Is there any reason why I can't remove the lower rail and still shoot the rifle? It looks to me like there should be no issues but I wanted to make sure.
There will be no problems. Just remove it and go shooting. If you are going to use a sling you would have to mount it on the side or get new swivel since there will not be a swivel mount under the rail.
If your rifle has the new "plastic" stock (as opposed to the GI glass stock on older models) you can simply buy a front swivel and attach it with screws to the front of the stock since the new stocks have threaded inserts molded into the forend. Couple drops of locktite on the threads and you'r good. I imagine lots of places have them but Treeline carries both the front sling loop and screws.
They can be removed but it doesn't look to me that they can be put back on without some serious conversation. Don't think I'd try it.
By the way, that GI stock should take the loop and rivits method fine, just a little more time involved than screwing the loop into place.
