Newbie here. Please excuse overall forum use lack of knowledge.

Considering a Springfield Scout Squad. The length seems nice. I understand they are louder than 22" m1as. Intended use is plinker, truck/4 wheeler/atv gun, hunting white tail and black bear (less than 100 yards). I use a 7mm rem mag currently. 7mm has never let me down, but looking for a change of pace and to add to the collection. Would likely scope the gun. Not sure if extended eye scout scope or a sadlak or sei receiver mount. I like the look of the walnut stock, however the polymer is 1/2lb less. But, poly springfield stock does have some complaints. I see usgi wood and fiberglass have better reviews.

Besides going with a more expensive m1a maker to begin with, what upgrades should I look to do to enhance reliability and accuracy? I am guessing there are stickies about these subjects and I apologize.

So far in my limited research I see that using USGI bolt guts or at least a USGI extractor is a good move? Also, op rod and piston mod?

My only gripe is pull the scout rail off and put a usgi hand guard on. It's a heat sink and disrupts your sight picture when it gets hot. Otherwise shoot the gun first and see what it does you might be surprised at what it can do. Try some Federal GMM or American eagle otm 168.

First, welcome to the forum. Second, I have a Scout with the scout mount on it and a Leupold LER scope and I like it. I can hold about 2moa and that's not the rifle's fault. Good to go out to about 3-400 yards(again my limit not the rifles). For me it is just the right size. One warning-it is a very loud sucker with the muzzle brake on it, you will need ear plugs or muffs or walker game ears if you hunt with it.

The Scout comes standard with a muzzle brake which is why it is louder.

The brake diverts the muzzle blast up, a little down and to both sides to stabilize the barrel jump.

Shooters on either side of you may complain.

Depending on what state you live in, you can change the brake for a flash hider.

No reason to start changing parts, learn the rifle first, establish a base line, then make changes if you feel the need, that way you'll know if the changes made a difference.

The first thing I did with my Scout was to shim the gas system, which did make a noticeable difference.

Started with a LER scope then switched to a Bassett scope mount and removed the Scout forward rail.

I just wasn't comfortable with the forward mounted scope on the M1A.

I do have one on a Ruger Gunsite Scout.

The Scout/Bush is my favorite barrel length and handles all milsurp loads and I 've shot mine out the 700yds.

Great combination when paired with a quality LER scout scope.

As for being louder I would disagree. The 16" SOCOM is very much louder and needs to be hand loaded to get the most out of the platform. A Scout can be made to be just a wee bit longer than the SOCOM and having 2" more barrel and sight radius with no special gas system parts makes a whole lot of sense.

I'm running SEI Coast Guard brakes on both of my 18"ers.

When buying extractors, hammers, sears triggers oct keep in mind that M1 Garand parts work too and usually come at a lower price.

The forward mount works for some. My holo sight I used years ago blew a seal after a long string of fire at a match. The aluminum got so hot it just cooked up into the sight. Thats what Bushnell claims anyway. I removed mine and the rifle in question actually shot a little better.

Good advice. You like the basset over the Sadlak and SEI receiver scope mounts? I think I looked at one online that allowed use of irons as well. I dont remember if it raised scope higher than others though.

The flash hider quiet the scout some compared to the brake? We usually shoot in the woods at deer camp. No bystanders. But, if flash hider won't leave me deaf after shooting some meat that would be nice.

I went with the Bassett Picatinney mount, which allows the use of the irons looking under the mount.

The Bassett is easy to install and remove, plus it does not require removing the stripper clip guide, which I occasionally use for charging the magazine.

If you go with the higher mount, you'll need a cheek riser.

I have a TacPro adjustable riser, adjustable up for scope down, for irons.

Thanks everyone. What about "hotter" 308win hunting ammo in the m1a? Anything to look out for with the gas system? I like hornady superformance in my 7mm. Claims to be 200fps faster without extra recoil impulse.

The gas system is not the problem with hotter hunting loads, bending the op rod is the problem with hot loads.
