Gentlemen,
I am new to the board but not to M1A's. I have owned two standard grade SA's over the years and have gotten good service. One of the rifles was built up a bit and I used it to shoot NRA high power. Now I am interested in a higher end rifle to shoot a few matches with and as a scoped medium range marksmans rifle for my police duties. I have wanted a supermatch for years and now have the ability to purchase one. I would welcome any input on the SA/SM.

Last time I was at the range, there were some Navy guys shooting, one with a SA Super Match. After watching him shoot and getting a look at his groups (he put a perfect ring in the X, open sights), I can say it was a sweet rifle. I can further add to that by the fact he let me put a 5 round mag through it, and while my groups were no where near his quality, it was incredibly accurate at 200 yds. He said he'd had it for about a year and shot it pretty regularly with competitions and such, never had a problem. If you got the money, go for it!

Aloha CR:

Welcome Aboard! The current SA SM rifles are well built and come with the lifetime warranty which is really nice. You can find some really good deals on post Ban SM rifles.

Recently I have also seen a lot of pre-ban SM rifles on the market.

Either way, I don't think you will be disappointed. I have one of each a post ban and pre ban SM M1A and love them both. If I had the money, and the inclination, I would opt to have had them in McMillan stocks. Msgt Maze has his SM rifles in McMillans and they look awesome!

They seem to be considerably more accurate "out of the box" than the NM M1A, and I can't put my finger exactly where it might have come from. Maybe its the lugged receivers or the heavy barrels and maybe both. But they are good shooters.

Good Luck and I hope you get yours soon.

Aloha and Best Wishes,

Tom O.

Hi C.R.

You could send one of your rifles to Ron Smith http://www.smithenterprise.com/ to have it built into what you want. Ron can even install a rear lug or front & rear bolted lug if you wanted. Smith's turn around time is very fast and you would have all G.I. parts :p . http://www.smithenterprise.com/m14_rifle_service.htm#STANDARD MATCH It would probably cost somewhere in the same neighborhood as a Springfield Super Match?

I've had three rifles rebuilt by Ron and I can't say enough about the quality of his work. http://msgt-maze.com/SmithForgedM14NM.html http://msgt-maze.com/SmithM14.html
