SA Scout Barrel Questions

1809 Views 15 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  H2O MAN
I am considering buying a SA M1A Scout:
1. Is the Barrel Chrome Lined?
2. Is there a greater flash with an 18" vs. the std 22" barrel?
3. Why no Flash Supressor like on the std models?
3. Any comments on this model?
Thanks

#1 - NO
#2 - NO
#3 - If legal in your state the Scout can be had with a GI flash supressor.
#3 - I fondled many an M1A and shot a standard before I settled on my Scout.

I think it's the best overall M1A available. Everyone should own one :D
1. Not from SA
2. Not that I can see 8O
3.Yep, depends on your state
4.Great for deer hunting and close up stuff. Get longer barrel if ya want longer distance shooting.

WSAR15,

I picked up a new Scout a short while back, and it's a great little shooter. It's accuracy has sure impressed me. I mounted a TC Recoil Proof 2.5-7 pistol scope on it last week. Been shooting some of the Aussie stuff and reloading for it. I have found that 41.5 - 42gr of IMR 4895 under a Speer 165gr Spitzer works fine for me. I have been exploding praire dogs out to 300yds.

Enjoy!

Thanks for the positive feedback.
One concern, not being familiar with the M1A: the 22" barrel may be optimized for the 308 round (including burning all the powder). If I use the AR15 for reference, going from a standard AR15 20" barrel to 16" (without a flash suppressor or muzzle brake) resulted in a terrible blating, flame throwing loud gun.
How is the Scout compared to the std M1A with 22" barrel?

Bottom one is my Scout. I had tack welded a M14E2 stabilizer on the front not so much for muzzle flash but for stability. Helps with the balance of the rifle & reduces recoil. Have a few hundred rounds thew the Scout but will put alot more threw it when the custom stock is completed & installed.

Thanks Hunting Hawk.
Would a std flash supressor (not bayonet lug) fit normally on the Scout?
There's a fresh post in the PX with a Scout for sale.
Most 308 ammo will burn its powder in 18" so you really get little more muzzle flash then with a 22" barrel. None that you'd really notice.
My Scout came from SA with a f/h but I don't think it was milspec. I don't care much about flash suppressors but stabilizers I like on my rifles. I had the M14E2 stabilizer so the Scout was a good place to install it.

Here is a picture of my Scout with a standard flash supressor I recently had SA install for me.

You may be able to order your rifle with the fs...
Sunrise420: Very very nice rifle! Just what I want!
Could you have installed the Flash Suppressor yourself or does it require special skills/modifications?
The Smith Vortex will slip right on and kills ALL the flash from this barrel.

Thanks
With special tools and basic skills I'm told it's an easy DIY swap.
I let SA, Inc. do it for me while the rifle was in for it's last RMA.
They returned my original muzzle break.

I have read nothing but praise for the Vortex - however, I like the GI look.
You need an Allen wrench and "castle nut" pliers. Hardware store and Brownells items respectively. Don't lose the Allen screw, it's not a standard part.

Some of the commercial pliers are pretty flimsy, but do the job nonetheless.

Note my SA Bush length barrel with Vortex is the exact weight as my HRA M14 barrel and flash supressor. Weighed on my postal scale good to 1/10th once.

Stay away from the Brownell's pliers. They are flimsy reproductions and will bend and/or break on you if you need to use any strength to tighten (common) or loosen (even more common) the castle nut on your rifle. SA Inc's repro is nearly three times as much, but is well made and will last. Sherlucks sells USGI wrenches for a little bit more than the SA Inc repros. I also read a post by someone who tack welded a couple of nipples onto a pair of vice grips to make his own super-heavy duty pair. I'm not sure which particlur kind of vice grips he used, but I think it was the kind that looks almost like a clamp.
Springfield is also making a Bush rifle. Looks just like the Scout, but no forward scout rail. It also has a FH. It's basically an 18 inch M1A. Springfield may have discontiued them, but a couple are listed on www.Gunbroker.com for $1,199.
