Reloading once fired Greek brass

447 Views 13 Replies 11 Participants Last post by  Phil “Murphy” McGrath
Can anyone tell me if I can use any of the following powders when reloading cleaned, trimmed, & cleaned primer pockets on once fired Greek brass; IMR 3031, IMR 4350 or IMR 7828?

Thank you

Are you loading for an M1, or a bolt gun?

Your question is very broad. If you are using 7.62 NATO brass the answer is probably. I would strongly urge you to check the Hodgdon powder website, hodgdon.com and look up some load data for 308 Winchester as a point to start your research. The powder used depends some on your bullet choice, primer used, and so on. For M14/M1A IMR 3031 is a fast burn rate powder and might be okay, IMR 4350 is not really suited for M14/M1A, and IMR 7828 I have no experience with to assist you. Take things one step at a time and wait for others in the forum to reply they have an enormous amount of experience and knowledge to assist with your question. I would advise once you have a recipe for your reloading post it and let people comment to be sure you have a safe starting point. A lot of my comments are made assuming you are new to hand loading for M14/M1A. :)

Yes, since it was properly cleaned.....Or else you will have to use IMR 4895 or 4064! :ROFLMAO:

Since they are asking in the Garand Accuracy section, I think we can assume 30.06 for Garand. But, we know what happens when we assume....

Good point. I did not catch the Garand Accuracy section. My apologies to everyone for the inability to read effectively.

No to any 4350 and a big no to 7828, way too slow.
IMR 3031 is good for light loads with 125gr. and 110gr. bullets.

Greek HXP brass is a great choice for M1 reloading. The primer pocket just needs to be relieved of the 3 crimp tabs. Very easy to do, just use your chamfering tool, give it a few twists and no more tabs. Compared this to LC brass which requires the crimp to be swaged or removed.

As far as powders, either IMR 4064 (my choice) or IMR 4895 are the 2 go to powders.
I was told Garands like IMR 4064.

You were told correctly.
IMR 3031 might work, but I wouldn't choose it over Varget, 4064, 4895, Reloder 12 or 15, or TAC.

I agree with the above posts saying the others shouldn't be used.
M1 Garand in 30.06 starting with the fastest IMR-3031 slowest IMR-4320.
