To do it properly, they have to be completely disassembled. The aluminum plate gets anodized and the steel parts get parkerized.

Most folks just paint the aluminum parts with Alumi-Hyde or something.

Thanks Kurt anodizing is of course out of my league and I think they are riveted together.
They actually come apart rather easily, just watch for the spring and ball bearing. If you are doing several, someplace like http://www.usanodizing.com/ could give you a bulk price. Anodizing isn't usually expensive as long as you remove all metal parts yourself.

I disassemble the butt plate (separate the flapper from the back plate) - I degrease, blast and repark the flapper as it is made of steel. The backplate is aluminum - so I blast those as well and repaint them with Aluma Hyde II - Dark Parkerizing color. I re-assemble and they look really nice! The Aluma Hyde II is epoxy and dries hard and will resist solvents. Getting the orginal USGI finish was just too expensive when I investigated that.

Here is one on a USGI Fiberglass Stock I just finished. I painted the stock with Aluma Hyde II Earth Brown.
