Hello AF shooters and veterans alike. I received orders for Holloman. Are there any forum members stationed out there? I heard hunting is pretty decent but is there a specific place you would recommend for long range shooting or hog hunting?

I lived in New Mexico, and there are plenty of impromptu shooting locations, but not many critters. There was not a hog problem then, but that was some time ago. Enjoy the Hatch green chilis, I'm salivating just thinking about it. Thanks for serving.

Hey, don't know how I missed this one!

I was at Holloman from 2012 - 2015. It is an absolute shooter's paradise! The range to use is called Sydney Paul Gordon Archery and Shooting Range. They have several, and I mean SEVERAL, different RANGES from 0m to 600m(if I remember correctly). The cost to use is extremely cheap, and they provide targets, safety gear, spotting scopes, sandbags, sleds, etc for FREE.

Unfortunately the only store worth calling a gun store there is Dave's Guns. In my experience, and the majority of others, he's full of crap and doesn't deserve anyone's business. Overpriced, and back during the ammo scarcity after Sandy Hook, he was buying Walmart's ammo and selling it higher. Walmart started writing WALMART on their ammo to fight against his shenanigans.

I miss that range every day though!

I miss the hatch red chili enchiladas! They're what started the whole craze about putting a fried egg on top of stuff.

I had heard that Holloman was awfully desolate, I had already had 6 years at Altus, then 6 more @ Sheppard when I got orders to Cannon. I declined retainability and ETSd. I know I would have liked it but ~13yrs (short tour to Korea first assignment) I had had enough of these very close to CONUS isolated assignments.

To each their own, but I loved the isolation. The local town was 10 minutes away. Nothing but empty desert between it and the base. Now I'm stationed at a base in the middle of a "city". Each gate has its own separate scenery (town, ghetto, country). I feel cramped! RNGR1

The F117's are based there after leaving Tonopah a few years ago, I worked for Lockheed back in the 90's at TTR, its about as desolate as Tonopah so you should be able to find good places to shooting.

It is hot in Alamogordo but you are at the foothills of the Sacramento Mountains and a short drive will get you out of the desert into the Mountains. Excellent hunting in the area. I drew a deer tag in unit 36 Ruidoso last year.

Im from northern NM. I went to college at NMSU in Las Cruces about 50 miles from Alamogordo. I bought a 1982 Mercedes G-Wagon SWB Cabrio that was imported on a C130 by a German Tornado mechanic. He had been at Holloman for 6 years he added a body lift 35" tires, ford 460 big block with a c6 mated to the fully syncronized transfer case. I paid $1650 for it with a NM title a few days before he was set to leave back to Germany. It was a money pit and I enjoyed every minute of it. It was truly a beast!

The F117s have been long gone. There were F22s there up until about 3-4 years ago. The 22's moved to Alaska and Florida, and when I left they only had F16s, German Tornados, and drones.

I remember pilots complaining about TTR till they got to Holloman then they wanted to come back. Been away from that life for awhile now, it was fun while it lasted.

Thanks guys! I haven't been on here for awhile due to the move and settling in the baby and wife. I haven't been shooting since I got here but I did buy a dirt bike. I've only gotten a few minutes on it in between adulting and work. Thanks for all the info USSF06.

I take that back... I just shot in the EIC competition and scored 419/500. I thought I did good but rumor has it the top 10 percent scored at or above 426'ish.
