Well, I made it to the range at long last
with my newest baby

This is an M14SA LRB receiver with a mix of USGI and Smith Enterprise parts (Crazyhorse barrel, SEI Muzzle Brake, NM Front sight, Extended bolt stop, Scope mount and NM gas cylinder lock with a dovetail for front sight)
Springfield Armory Unitized gas cylinder
H&R bolt & trigger group, Winchester Oprod
Bravado stock from Whamo Camo
The extended bolt stop is the nuts. Just slap it like you would an AR Great!
I opted for the dovetail cylinder lock because I figured if I didn't like the shorter sight radius I can just pop the front sight off the lock and move it out to the end.

Assembled by Mr. Tim Strait AKA Warbird

Here's what it did
This is at 50 yards (tired old eyes  )
Iron sights, 3 shot groups
Groups 1,2, 4 &5 are off a rest, group 3 was offhand hence the spread out

The center group is 1
at 11 O'clock is group 2
at 7 o'clock is group 3 (offhand--since it spread out I decided to go back to a rest)
Group 4 is at 5 o'clock
and Group 5 is at 1 o'clock
This was with Australian Surplus

At the very start, I had a few feeding issues which, after receiving my e-mail, Warbird called me to discuss, and upon following his advice, --bugs are gone
This rifle is very tight--Who needs bedding? :D
and the trigger is superb
Tim did outstanding work

Talking with Warbird was a pleasure as well
He was a gentleman and showed genuine concern for my questions both during the build and during the break-in.
During the break in it handled Port, Aussie, Lake City M-80, USA (Winchester) 7.62 and Federal Gold Medal Match 175 gr
This rifle operates like a champ and is more accurate than I am
Now for a scope... :)
Super Sniper? Burris 3x9 Compact?

Great report.
It sounds like Tim built another winner.
I have 2 trigger groups heading his way.

SEI sure makes great parts. I'm running the same dove tale site mount and
extended bolt stop. I went with the DC Vortex.
Is your Crazy Horse barrel reamed for the M118LR round?
Could you tell us more about the barrel?

Thanks --
What were the feeding problems and what was the advice - I found most of my feeding problems in the past were mag related
Well done and enjoy and well done to Warbird on the build! You touched on something that is just one of the reasons for the success of the "Crazy Horse" design and why the military is embracing the rifle in ever increasing numbers: no bedding required. The cost-effectiveness in rebuilding old, tired warrriors into the something that doesn't screw the taxpayer is a blessed relief.
Yessir, the barrel is reamed for the M118, but the closest I could get to that was the Federal GM Match 175 gr
Any sources for trhe real McCooy would be appreciated
I got the barrel back in October when I decided to go ahead with the project. I spoke at length with Ron Smith about building a rifle
He built a Bush Rifle for me a couple years ago. At any rate he told me that the gov't was snatching up everything he could make so I snagged the barrel he had and once he parkerized it, he mailed it to me with the other parts
They sat for several months as I got caught between batches at LRB
My LRB finally became available in late December and I called SEI only to be told that there was a backlog of several months for the build. That, while disappointing at the time was a lucky break in disguise as I decided to give Warbird a try. Well he was able to get it back to me in a few weeks and considerably under the budget I had allotted
I am really pleased with this rifle
Why is no bedding required on the 'Crazy Horse' design?
Tommo, I think he is saying that on his particular rifle because the stock and receiver lock up is so tight that he doesn't need to bed it. Since he is using a synthetic stock, this stock lock up should stay tight for a long time. With wood stocks, even if it starts off with a tight lock up it will tend to loosen up over time as the wood compresses. One thing I've found with wood stocks, though, is that if you saturate the stock with some natural oil (i.e. PTO or BLO), the stock will swell and tighten up the stock and receiver lock up (also the mag well will get tighter, too, which may not be so desirable for quick mag changes), and if you seel the finish with a synthetic or varnish/oil blend, then it will maintain this tight lock up for quite some time.

Bigchoad, didnt' mean to hijack your thread. Very sweat looking set up. I think the SEI Crazy Horse configuration will eventually replace the SAI Scout Squad configuration as the short barreled M14 type rifle set up. Congrats on a sweet shooter.

Well, here's my .02
Bigchoad was a great guy to deal with and talk to on the phone.
I only wish I had more time to talk to everyone.

The feed problems were due to the tightness of the rifle after assmebly.
I could have loosened it up a bit more but, felt it was O.K. before I shipped it.

The mag was a bit tight as well but, he says it now works smoothly.

The USGI fiberglass stock is very tight and was as good as bedding the receiver.

I'm sure the rifle will shoot under an inch at 100 yards using a scope, no problem.

I'll also add that this was a case where he needed help after the sale and I gave it (as ya know). If anyone ever has a problem, just let me know. I'll always be there. Is that customer service or what ? ;)

Warbird's comment hits the nail right on the head! This is just one more reason why the Crazy Horse system works so well. You just don't need to go through the goat-rope of a glass-bedded stock on a military weapon like the M14SE to get the level of battlefield accuracy you need. Well done on the build, BTW! This really helps Ron out taking catre of the retial customers while he can focus on the military side.

From what I know, which is not a whole lot, just from reading about the new products on line. The Crazy Horse is being made for the military, an issue rifle for Designated Marksman. The old service grade barrels were chambered to fire standard ball ammo even in less than optimal conditions. These barrels are great for reliability & most are plenty accurate. The Crazy Horse barrel is chambered for the M118lr. The throat is probably not quite as long as the old service barrel and there is probably not as much jump(free bore) to the lands as the old service barrel. Also I believe the rifling is a little faster for the heavier bullets. I guess, and this is only guessing, is what makes this so cool is it is a production run. It is desirable to me just as a NIW N.M. old service barrel would be. They are rare & expensive finds. Hopefully the crazy horse barrels will be easier available to folks like us after military contracts are meet. You can get a Barret, Citeron, Douglas or just about any other after market barrel out there finish reamed to whatever your hearts desire and they are good barrels. But, they are not drop in, they must be finish reamed. The short of it is a new run of service grade match grade barrels are being made. I believe that is what all the hoop-la is about. If not, please someone correct me or add to it. This is a very good question hickory.
