Enclosed are pictures of targets from my recent outing at the range.

The rifle:

Springfield Armory M1A Standard Rifle (production date 12/03)

Modifications:

1. Laminated birch stock from Fulton Armory. The original solid birch stock (USGI surplus) cracked between the selector switch cutout and the stock fixture hole. The FA laminated stock came in the “white”, no finish on it. I refinished the stock. I have not bedded the stock yet. Bedding is a major pain in the butt with these rifles. I may do it someday.

2. Gas shimmed the gas block. It took .020” worth of shims.

3. USGI extractor, spring and plunger. The original extractor was garbage. It would fail to eject once out of every 20 rounds. Now the rifle runs like a Swiss watch.

Both groups were shot using iron sights.

Thanks, Paul

Very nice! Have you shot multiple groups to see if it's fairly consistent? Gonna try out some optics as well?
No optics for now!

I shot a 1.47" group with 41.5gr. of IMR today too.

Today was for load testing and I loaded five rounds per load just to see what they would do. However, all three loads did very well. More testing is in order.

I have also shot a 1.26" group with German DAG surplus with this rifle. This rifle can really shoot.

Thanks, Paul

Great shooting Paul!

I shot a lot of these a few years ago, with some positive results, but too many flyers at longer distances, so I gave up on the Lap 155's.

Try the Nos 155 when you get a chance.

I tried them all--Lapuas, Sierra 2155s, Nosler 155s, Hornady A-Max 155s, and even Berger 155.5s.

Couldn't get better than about 1.5 inch at 100 yards. Scoped. Most 1.75-2.5 inches.

The rifle shoots 175s from .75 to 1.25 quite regularly. USGI 173s, not so good, 1.5-2 inches.

Oddly, a box of Hornady 155 A-Max match ammo did 1 inch all the time, at almost exactly 2800 fps. Just couldn't get those bullets to do that for me with two or three different powders, regardless of velocity.

Anyone else have trouble with the 155s in the M1A?

I can't get the lapua's to shoot in mine, I can shoot SMK's and AMAX'es fairly nice all day, but the lapuas.... hmmm, it just doesn't like them.

I never thought about shooting my 155gr Scenars thru my bush rifle. Now I can burn up what my PSS didn't like at all.

Nice shooting there BTW. You are in the ball park for a great load there. Keep up the good work.

I just got back in from the range with Geeck a few minutes ago and saw this. James is right, the 155 is a good bullet and I don't know which brand is best...Yet !!! But i will shortly....I am doing a work-up on the 155 Palmas for Perry next year to see if they are viable for the N.T.I.T. match....the 600yd. is the one I am most concerned with and will know more by next week as testing should be concluded....If the recoil can be kept down, the speed can go up......Great shooting there bud !!...You are right too, these things can really shoot. My first group of five was 1" today with a clean bore and a reassembled rifle...surprised me too with these loads.
