In an unusual twist, the weatherman nailed the forecast. 3 hours of sun around noon, followed by snow. I made it to the range at the perfect time to shoot the match M1 a little. Weather has been crap for over a month so I’ve only been dry firing, making today very enjoyable for live fire. Actually shot well. I’m always surprised at the velocity SD for 308 compared to my 223 loads. 308 is always better.

10 rounds offhand with two yips into the 8 ring, but otherwise good

Yes sir. 168 SMK at 200 and 300. I use the 168 eld-m for 600 just to make me feel better.

Rapid fire strings with this Garand are interesting. It always puts the first round from the enbloc low left in the 8 ring, so I have to hold the left corner of the post on the "X" for the first shot and the next 7 use a normal 6 o'clock hold. (I've posted about this in the past) Its funky, but consistent :)

Managed to get back to the range yesterday afternoon. Days are getting longer and the temp was in the low 40’s so I could even feel my trigger finger. I started with some sitting position practice and was having a heck of time holding off correctly for my first shot. By the end of the string I could feel that I was muscling the rifle around. Not good. I’m going to work on my sling setting and position. Shot 4 was called and was completely operator error. My group was high right despite using my normal 200 sitting zero. Clearly my position was lacking.

Offhand was much better. I had a perfect NPA going and every time I opened my eyes the post was in the black. Group was high, and not as tight, but my bad shots were not as wide either. It was the end of the day so I had 11 rounds to burn. Usually I simulate a 10 round string just like and EIC match. No sighters, 3 min prep, 10 min for the string. That put me at 96-1X. My last shot (number 11)was an X to end on.

Gotta love the M1! I started in HP with a Korean return with a new barrel ( on my nickel ) and did pretty well with it. After shooting enuf matches I qualified for the DCM Garand and got a real nice H&R with what appeared to be a new SA barrel.
I did a little match tuning on it and won the local M1 match at Kenmore in the Service Class, ( before match tuning ) and beat the Match class guns as well.

Later when I went to the M1A I used the H&R mostly for prone matches at Plantation and Machias and did well with it there too. Those were fun shoots.

Still have that DCM gun, I wont ever sell it.

Yep, that’s something to keep till the end. For all the similarities, the Garand is a different beast from the M14. Even in 308 like mine the recoil impulse fees different, balance is different, and the extra barrel is nice for extra velocity on prone matches like you used.
