I purchased a M1A Loaded with a black synthetic stock. I have a few questions about using it in competition:

1)Which CMP events at the National Matches (and other CMP sanctioned events) can I use my M1A Loaded?

2) I bought my Loaded with a synthetic stock because of the pricepoint compared to the walnut and because I understand wood swells affecting the accuracy.. The synthetic stock looks to be quality, but is not a high-end synthetic stock like Macmillan. Is it good to use in competition, or should I try to find a quality aftermarket synthetic or walnut stock?

An M1A Loaded in the factory polymer stock will usually shoot under 2 moa with Match grade ammunition. This is more than enough to keep your shots in the 10 ring. However, most will agree that you need a rifle capable of 1.5 moa or less in order to get repetitive hits in the X ring.

A National Match rifle usually has a heavy stock that is properly bedded. This allows the forend to steady the barrel by way of draw pressure.

When using an unbedded stock, such as with your Loaded rifle, the shooter needs to create his own draw pressure by properly using the sling. This takes a considerable amount of discipline and practice, but has been taught by the Army and Marines since the adoption of the 1903 Springfield.

To your first question, you may fire your Loaded M1A in all of the CMP Board matches. These include Pres. 100, NTI, NTIT, etc. The only match at Perry or any CMP match that your rifle would not qualify for is Modern Military.

As KurtC states, a bedded stock will make your rifle more competitive and if you decide to go that route, just buy a McMillan and be done with it, though they aren't cheap and there is still a considerable lead time on them.

The CMP has 2 different rulebooks - both are available for download from the CMP website.

1) COMPETITION RULES FOR CMP GAMES RIFLE AND PISTOL MATCHES
2)CMP COMPETITION RULES FOR SERVICE RIFLE AND PISTOL

Both books include the requirements for rifle configuration.

If your 'loaded' has a rubber buttplate, it might not be allowed in the CMP (or NRA) 'SERVICE RIFLE' category.

The stock should be ok, but it might not work very well when using a sling - it might be too flexible. 'Competition stocks' are typically quite stiff so the stock itself does not bend or flex when a sling is used. Only way is to try it, and see whether it works OK in sitting and prone positions.

Not to get to off topic but does any one know a club I could join for cheap to allow me to purchase from the CMP online store? Since I'm neither LE or military I have to be a member of a club. One would think the NRA would be sufficient but according to the CMP themselves they aren't.
