I have had this rifle for awhile and either I am very dumb or just do not know what I am doing. With the irons I can't get this rifle to shoot lower than 6 inches high at 100yds with the rear aperture bottomed out. Should a shorter barrel (19.25in) require a taller front sight or should it shoot normally with a standard height front sight? I am almost positive the front on this one is standard height.

Also, it is the M21 model with the integrated scope rail. It is great except I have struggled ever since I put a scope on it with the eye relief. I have thought it was just me but the rail is mounted so far forward on this rifle that I really strain to get a proper view through my scope and it really doesn't matter what scope I put on it. The only way I have found to do it is mount a cantilevered mount backwards which is not correct at all and drives me crazy.

Any thoughts or ideas on this before I decide to sell this thing?

LRB suggests a barrel shorter than 22" needs the taller front sight
Find a scope manufacturer who provides the proper eye relief for your rifle/situation

Where would one find a taller front sight for a scout or bush rifle? I have looked and came up empty.

Shorter barrels do need taller sights. Many options are available. I remember one post from a while back where some one added to the front sight height with JB weld and a tip from a screwdriver. Can you accurately measure what you have?

The sight that came with the rifle from JRA direct measures 8/32 inch or .5 cm. If that sight height is correct for this rifle then I am doing something way wrong.

Springfield armory has the taller front sight also, although it's not on their website you would call and order over the phone.

So, if H&R came out with this 19.25 in barrel length even as a prototype then what proper height should the front sight be/did they use? I mean it is longer than a scout or bush or tanker rifle but shorter than standard. I would think that it would make a difference for optimal rear aperture adjustment? No?

Not trying to be a smart a$$, 8/32=1/4 or .250 inches. .5 cm =.19685. The difference in these numbers is almost a sixteenth of an inch, .05315 to be exact. You may want to ask for help with measuring.

My Scout has a .062 NM front sight.

This refers to the width of the blade.

I had the same problem on my favorite rifle. Not quite as bad. I finally went to a front sight mounted on the gas lock.

I was just measuring the blade height before. Can't find my micrometers right now. I remeasured and the closest measurement I can get is 15mm or .590 inches. that is just using a small metal ruler with mm markings. That is measuring the whole sight from the tall side of the blade. I removed the sight to measure it. I will have to locate my micrometer to get a more accurate reading. Sorry. So I could be off 1mm either way.

FYI, the LRB tall sight is the standard GI width.

If you want the thinner 0.062" National Match width tall front sight, you have to call Springfield Armory for one.

I'm surprised nobody else makes them.

On the scope issue, can you attach a picture so we can see what your setup looks like?

Ok, now I am confused again. You are saying that your scout's front sight measure's .580"? Is that the correct height for a scout length barrel? Or is that a standard sight height? I apologize in advance for my ignorance.

That is the height of the front sight that came on my 2012 Scout.

Is it the correct height? Don't know.

I can only assume it is correct as I have no issues with getting the rifle zeroed using the instructions that came with the rifle.

So, I have been searching and reading and learned that yes you do need a taller sight for an 18-18.5in barrel. Specifically the "tall NM" sight. Further research however indicates that some people are perfectly fine using the standard height sight on the 19.25 in barrel. However, in all the pics I can find of 19.25 in builds it appears that they are in fact wearing a taller front sight even though some specs of those builds indicate otherwise. So now my questions are 1. What would be the correct sight height for a 19.25 in barrel? and 2. What could be changed or be different that allows some with a 19.25 in barrel to use a standard height front sight and some not?
